Hi,
Bright sun is not good for photos but is good for curing the finish so I can rub back the gloss and clean up the corners.

Yes Dave. Very nice work as always!!

Hi,
Thanks for the comments. The rifle will be done soon and I will post it. it is sort of a John Noll inspired piece.

Hi,
I engraved the side plate in a style inspired by John Noll. It came out OK.

I love the cross and the engraving is well executed, great job on the rifle overall. That should make the new owner very happy.

Hi Tony and Bama,
Thanks. I personally am not very religious but the owner is devout and donated many years of his life to missionary work. He and I are good friends and I thought John Noll's typical cross hatching behind the cheek piece would be a very nice spot to design a space to inlet a cross and surprise my friend. I put the cross on the gun and when my friend saw it, he was so happy that tears came to his eyes. It made my day.

Very nice Dave. Among all the details I really like the color.

Dave,
I love John Noll's patchbox engraving. Is there anything similar on the other side? ;)

Hi Jeff,
Oh, you bring up a sore point. I was aching to do a full John Noll engraved patch box but my friend and client did not want a brass box. I made a wooden one modeled after the early Noll shown in Kindig's book. The other major deviation from typical Noll guns was the butt plate. My client is an accomplished target shooter and wants to use the gun during competition. He likes the toe of the butt plate to have a crescent that extends out a little so it can tuck under his arm pit and he doesn't like an extended heel. So I used a typical Lancaster butt plate not the style usually used by Noll. Regardless, I got to try my hand at Noll's carving and the profile of the gun looks a lot like the third Noll rifle shown in Dave Hansen's book. I will eventually do a full on John Noll with all the bells and whistles. Thanks for looking and asking, Jeff.

Very nice work Dave. If your engraving is ok. Then mines pathetic at best. Hope to meet you at Dixon's.
-
Well darn!
That's too bad Dave, but I look forward to seeing it when you do get around to doing the full blown Noll.
I hope to do one myself eventually.

Hi,
Done! It is kind of a John Noll inspired sort of thing. The butt plate is not correct but that is what the owner wanted. He likes the toe to hook a little under his arm pit. It has a worked over Durs Egg lock, Rice 50 cal 44" B" weight barrel, cast thimbles and a modified John Armstrong trigger guard. The finish is scraped and burnished, ferric nitrate, polymerized tung oil. It is a bit heavy to my liking but the owner is an accomplished target shooter and he likes the weight. I can see some tiny rain drops in the photos. It must have misted while I was photographing and I did not even notice. Either i am good at concentration or I am getting old, or both. Enjoy and thanks for looking,
dave

Excellent work Dave. Your skill keeps getting more impressive with each project.
-
David,
Beautiful work (as usual !)....I particularly like the diaper work background on the butt carving and the inlaid cross. And don't worry about getting old and not noticing the rain. When it rains hard enough, you'll notice.
Lovely rifle.

Excellent work.Thanks for sharing.

Dave,
Great result, even the sliding wood box. Just can't imagine passing up a chance for John Noll style patch box. ;).
Jeff

you did some nice work there,Like the cross detail also
-
Thanks for looking everyone,
Jeff, I'll get to a full blown Noll in the next few years. I intend to do a Noll, an Eister, a Berry Sr, and either a western PA rifle or a John Fleeger. The Berry Sr is next after I get done building a few guns for others and my English rifle. I wish I had more hours in the day.

At'll do Dave!! Very nice work!

Hi Tim,
Thank you for that. That's exactly the phrase I speak to the border collies I've raised over the years. When I would say that to Bella (Smart Dog), she would be instantly by my side waiting for the next task.

Dave,
Thank you so much for bringing your rifle to my shop so that I could see it up close. The rifle is
evin nicer than the pictures show. Be sure to bring it to Dixon's so that everyone can appreciate
the quality of the craftsmanship as I did.
I can't make up my mind which I liked better, your rifle or your dog. You are both welcome here
any time.

Thank you Dave!
It was fun visiting with you and Esther. I always enjoy seeing your new fantastic projects and swapping stories. I am looking forward to seeing you at Dixon's but at anytime you are welcome at my place. I'd love it if you paid me and my shop a visit in Braintree.
