Title: value of a Jack Garner Leman?
Post by: The Baron on July 06, 2016, 10:46:26 PM
I hope it is OK to ask this here...

I ended up with a very nice condition J Garner built Leman that I am planning to part with (and use the funds for a different flintlock ;D).   I don't know if I've got it valued correctly though.  It's a .54 full stock, iron trim.  I believe the lock is an L&R Manton and the barrel (reportedly made by Green Mountain) and is 36" long, 15/16" full octagon with a very small amount of taper toward the muzzle (according to my calipers).   The trigger is a double set, of unknown make, and only fires by setting the rear trigger first.  The gun hasn't seen much use, I don't think.  I have not shot it, but the previous owner said it is extremely accurate.  The only markings on the gun is "J Garner" in script on the top of the barrel.  What do y'all think the fair value is for this gun?  I won't be able to make the Gunmaker's Fair this year (missing it by one day  :'() but I might swing my Dixon's on my way home from CT and see if I can trade for a fowler or smooth rifle.  Does anyone know if Dixon's entertains trade-ins?  I've never been to their shop.  Thank you!

The lock is the L&R Ashmore.

It's a plain, utilitarian rifle with no special features.  Unless someone is looking for a short hunting rifle, the barrel is a negative.  Adding up the current value of the sum total of the parts and you will approach its current approximate value.

T O  F How many would you build like that for current value of parts?

Unless someone is looking for a short hunting rifle, the barrel is a negative.

How is that?  I am under the impression that +/- 36" barrel is about correct for a Leman style rifle?

That trigger assembly should be a double lever, so it probably just needs tuning to work right. You are right 36" barrels are within the range of barrel lengths offered by Leman. It's a shame it doesn't have one of the classic Leman patch boxes in the stock, but you can't have everything.
It is signed by Jack so either it was made by him early on, or he made it himself in the Tennessee Valley Arms shop. It has nice wood, and shows no damage. If I couldn't get $1,200.00 for it I wouldn't sell it. JMO.

Your rifle looks to be in nice shape and was put together by a well known builder. Heck, I'd think you could get more than the value of the components.  The rifle in the picture below sold for $1350.  It has a 36" barrel, is a well built gun but it is of no particular style or school, pretty generic and is unsigned.

Have a few rifles with Green Mountain barrels. If Hitten the ten ring is a negative. Like to know why. Maybe because it's not swamped? It's a hunting gun. Seen a lot of plain guns go for a lot more! $1200 is a fair price Imho
