Title: Bobby Hoyt rebored barrels
Post by: P.W.Berkuta on July 26, 2016, 02:47:55 AM
I got my two Green Mountain barrels back from Bobby Hoyt the other day. I had him bore & rifle the two barrels to .54 cal 1 in 66" twist radius groove. He had them done in two weeks time - not too shabby I must say. They came out really nice except for the crown part which was just faced off square. I ended up crowning them myself the way I wanted them - all in all - I'm happy with the way they turned out.

Nice. Could a 40 cal be bored out to a 50 cal ?

Sure, assuming you have enough wall thickness.

Those crowns should load tight combinations quite easily. Nice!  It's so easy on the lathe, even just using a cutting tool for a .45 or 60 degree angle, then emery or wet-dry paper and maybe crocus cloth to finish polish.

These two Green Mountian barrels WERE .40 cal I had them re-done to .54 cal - Bobby said that there would be no problem and he was correct ;).
They are 15/16" across the flats.

I did not show the 320, 400, & 500 grit cloth I used after that stone ;D!

Bobby Hoyt does some great work! I had a barrel opened from a 50 to a 54 some years back. She is a tack driver! He lines barrels and does gain twist also.

He did one for me a few months ago.  I got it back quick too, and it looked great.
