With my work schedule, making it to classes or getting hands on building experience isn't gunna happen for the next 22+ years lol...
The build bug has bit me...But I definitely need some guidance.
There are a number of books and videos available. I feel as though they may help with my next build.
I am sure like any other books/videos that some are better than others...Some not being worth the paper they are printed on.
Anyone have recommendations for a beginner gun builder??
I think a little learning is in order before I put another pile of parts and stock on the bench.

I have never seen a video that didn't encourage a nap 1/3rd of the way through. :P

Lol!!
I'm sure watching a video of some dude building a rifle is super exciting...Sitting on the edge of your seat type action...lol

I highly recommend the Mike Brooks gunmaking tutorial in the woodworking tutorial section.
Recreating the American Longrifle by William Buchele is a pretty good book.

Recreating the American Longrifle. The first book I purchased 20 plus years ago and still find it useful.

Thanx guys!
I did read Mike Brooks tutorial numerous times.
Just looking to continue learning and understanding. I know without classes and hands on learning beside someone that knows what they are doing I have a bit of a learning curve.
My first build wet my feet....But there's a lot I didn't do...Or have to do. Now I have the build bug and can't wait to start another. I'm holding off until I find a house and am moved in. So until then I figured it'd be wise to try to continue learning.

Mauser, I am with those that recommend Buchele. It is probably the best and most importantly, easiest to follow. If you are just starting out though, almost any book or video on the market you can get will teach you something. To quote the movie Animal House "Knowledge is Good." Just keep at it anyway you can. Learn to be satisfied yet critical with your work and the next one will be better. There are a few rare people that can turn out a first class perfect rifle on the first try, I wager most of us would rather no one see our first efforts. The important thing is to improve on the next one.

A friend loaned me two Hershel house videos. I really got a lot of encouragement from both of them.

I have found Wallace Gusler's videos on carving and engraving useful. The same goes for Lynton McKenzie's Beginning Engraving video. I like Mark Silver's video on building with hand tools. I also think that Hershel House's intro video on rifle building is useful for an overview of the process. Hershel Houses first video on blacksmithing is useful if you plan to forge iron mounts.
As to books, I started with Recreating the American Longrifle.
The thing about building is that everybody has a little bit different way of doing things and they are all potentially correct. I change the way I work all the time. Sometimes it helps, some times it is a lesson learned as to what not to do.

I have some of Homers (VHS) videos!/what Mike said!

To get a pretty good idea of what is involved you can watch Duelists's videos on utube.

"Recreating The American Longrifle" is, in my humble opinion, probably the best single book on the subject. It's well illustrated with good quality photos and sharp drawings, I think it's better than maybe 99% of videos.
I've had my copy for 15 years, and I use it several times during the course of every build. Thankfully, not for the same thing... ;)

Mauser,
I agree that the "Recreating ..."book by Buchele is really good. However I have the 2 DVD set by Homer Dangler that I'd be glad to send you. I've had it quite a while and probably learned all I can from it. Just contact me by my personal e-mail if you are interested. I'll drop it in the mail in a week or so.

Mike,
If you can make it 1/3rd of the way through you are a better man than I. :(

Mauser,
I didn't have any luck sending a reply to your e-mail through the Forum. Go to my profile and use my personal e-mail.
