I recently put this longknife together for myself, between rifle projects. The blade is cut from an old broken machete blade. It seems flexible but was extremely hard to drill and sharpens nicely. Handle is off a deer I got back in my woods a year ago. It's hard to find such staight antler handles....and I have one more! Poured pewter at the end of the handle to make the handle a little longer for me. Weight and balance is most excellent. My old longknife was handle heavy using a thinner 100+yr. old butcher blade.
I'm pretty happy with the results shown here.

tom,i like it alot...very nice knife.....trekking season is here now i have to get out my gear and get it ready...wish i would have taken the time to make myself a new knife this past winter....i am soo jealous...

Happy, I would be happy too if I had one turn out like that. Nice lines. Did you use something to age the blade or was it like that?

Tom,.......very nice knife. I really like the overall proportions and the blade shape. Pretty well depicts my idea of a longhunters knife. Thanks for posting it. tim

Yes, I applied the much maligned blue/clorox treatment to the blade.
Does anyone know what steel the common Chinese machetes are made of ???I haven't done the "spark test" yet.

My best guess would be something equal to our 10xx. Basicly, a simple steel of iron, carbon, and a little manganese, or not. To make cheap products, the first thing in importance is to use cheap materials. Not to say that the steel is poor, just that it is simple, and easy to produce. Nice job on the knife. Looks like pro work. Not a critique, but merely a simple tidbit of info. As far as I know, there are no documentable 18th c. knives with pewter bolsters, or mounts. The key being "documentable". I only know what I read, and have done a few myself knowing that, but sometimes one makes what sells. There are some that Madison Grant dated into the 18th c., but Grant is known to have been a bit "imaginative" with his dateing. At any rate, nice work, and you have a good eye for proportional balance.

Just a follow up....the spark test revealed it to be a mild carbon steel probably in the 1040-1050 range. So it can be hardened easily.
As for authenticity of the pewter used on knives in that time period, that's OK. Heck, even the painter David Wright carries a similar weapon, so if it's correct enough for him, I'm OK with it ;D

Tom or other knife makers out there -- where are you getting your crown antler handles? It seems that they are getting hard to find at a reasonable price :o :o- if you can find it at all. I have four or five blades I want to put crown antler on.

Danged if I'll pay the rediculous prices either. Watch garage sales and auctions, sometimes they can be found or bartered real cheap.

Boy that's a nice one! I was looking for one like that at the Kalamzoo Show in March, but no one had anything like it. Not even blade blanks. Everyone had patch knives and Bowies. So I made my own in a pinch with what was laying around! Isn't that the American pioneering way?

No i didn't make it. I started working with knife making but its enough work making the powder horns and helping my dad with the new business. (York County Fire Locks) I hope to get more into knife making though!!

Tom, I didn't answer your question. A knife similar to that one, with sheath, would be in the $235-$250 range plus shipping. It also has a sterling silver pommel on the antler.
