This is one of Mr. Haffner's targets that down here in the South we always called "the nightmare". I've shot it at matches literally hundreds of times over many years and never scored a 50. Well Saturday at our little match in Tullahoma changed all that. Using my new smr halfstock .40 caliber l managed this 50 and a X...ticking patched .400 ball lubed with Mr. Flintlock lube ahead of 45 grains 3fg Goex. The target was shot offhand at 25 yards. I am truly a blessed man.

I must have shot that target a hundred times and never have shot a 50. For me, it was a nightmare. You are truly blessed.
Back in 76 or 77 I took my old caplock Renegade and traveled out of town to a rendevous, I was green as an apple. But I was also lucky. The old whitehaired and white bearded man shooting next to me was Mr. Charlie Haffner. He was shooting a flintlock of either .28 or .25 caliber. Can't remember that far back anymore. He saw my inexperience right off and sorta took me under his wing for the shoot. He could really shoot that flintlock. It was my first time being around one and I was hooked. Everything thereafter was just a stepping stone to flintlocks.
Some years back I asked Mr. Tip Curtis if Charlie was still around and to my surprise he was still kicking. For all I know he still is.

BTW, I don't see a photo of your rifle.

Great shooting. I have been lucky on that target once when I got 4 - 10s and a zero. That upper right squirrel is a tough one for me to see at 25 or longer ranges and I missed the squirrel and even the tree. Fun match though.

I shot a 50 on the Nightmare in 1983.  I framed it, and still have it on my book shelf.  I knew it would be the only 50 I ever shot.

Good shooting - I see 3 x's, or do the scorers only count centre of the ball over the line for the higher score?

To Mr Wobbly. 👍👍.

Center of ball it is Daryl. 14 bores don't get an advantage on paper targets. 👾🤠

Heck on that target I'm lucky to score a thirty. I just can't see the danger thing. BJH

Hey crawdad, I posted particulars about this rifle on the gun building forum a while ago. It's down a bit on the list now but the post title is "Finished up today".

Thanks for the kind remarks but in my own eyes I have a long way to go with my gun stocking abilities.

Many of us have names that are well earned ( dry ball, two ball, no ball ect)  You were sure wobbling right that day. I do not I could do that off a bench.

That target is more about being able to see, than being able to shoot.  I suppose all shooting is....
But that example is quite an accomplishment for certain.

I too have fallen victim to the nightmare.  The ghost squirrel is the one that always gives me fits.

John was there... along with several rifles he had built over the years. If you look close you can see he signed the target. John is a friend for years and at 83, he's still going strong.

Wobblyshot:

You're gonna have to change your name, bud.  "Wobbly" just don't cut it anymore.

That's some sweet shooting right there.
