Does anybody know the barrel length of the pistol grip Hawken in Jim Gordon's book? I am wanting to play around with making a pattern for this particular rifle and am looking or some starting dimensions. If anybody has actually seen and or taken any dimensions it would be much appreciated. I know I can fake a reasonable drawing but real data is gold.
Thanks, David

Without any other info, does the pictures show full length? You could get a decent guesstimate with a set of dividers, assuming a sensible length of pull. Setting the dividers for the distance from the trigger to the butplate curve. Then walk the divider down the barrel, say two and one half spans. With the trigger pull of 13 1/2. Roughly equals 34 3/4 inches. I'm certain you already thought of this, but I'm posting this as a help for some of the newer guys. BJH

Is it this one?

Yes! And I saw Taylor's copy a few years back I think. It was beautiful.

David;
You might email or call the Cody Museum. I think it lives there. If you want a general Hawken pattern, I can go up to Glorieta and get one for you from an original.

Hi David: the rifle I built in 2014 has a 34" .62 cal barrel. The rifle's oa weight is 9.9 pounds. My own Hawken with a full length 36" barrel of the same taper weights over 11 pounds, but the wood is denser too on my rifle. Since the pistol grip rifle, I built one with a 32" barrel,(same taper) and found the sweet spot for balance and handling. When I built the pg Hawken, I think I used some logical ratios to arrive at 34"...if that helps.
Here's the best image I have of the whole rifle...I hope its owner doesn't mind.

how do i upload a picture (http://imgbb.com/)
80TPI on the aperture spindle. A bit of care is needed in starting that tap, as well as the die to cut the male threads.

I thought I'd get the guy who did this, to checker my Sporting Rifle.

If the rifle is in the Cody museum, you can get on their web page and they have a section of photo's of all their rifles on display showing different views. The only issue I have had using their data is that a Hawken rifle could show up under different names such as plains rifle, Hawken rifle, etc. I looked at their data a bunch a few years back.

Roger B. and Roger S.,
You guys were spot on with the Cody museum web sight. I googled it and in less than 1 minute I had photos and dimensions of the pistol grip Hawken right in front of me.

To al the rest of you, thanks for your input. I appreciate your efforts.

Great link David...thanks for that.

At least in person, I always thought the rounded pistol grip looked a little "lumpy" or "baggy". I wonder if it would look better with a flat bottomed, swept back, grip like a Sharps? But then that might not be PC and Sam didn't ask me anyway.

Hawken's grip is reminiscent of English bag butt pistols. There are many features of Sam's work that emulate English tradition in gunbuilding. For what it's worth, the bag butt feels good in the hand...very natural.

While replacing my photos, I found this thread. Bob and I measured the Hawkens at the Cody Museum in December, 2018. The Pistol Grip Hawken barrel is 32 9/16 inches long ahead of the snail, 1.145 across the flats there and 1.155 at the muzzle. The muzzle is .60, but the bore is .541 as we measured with gauges on a cleaning rod. (We gave our measurements to the museum technician, but they did not correct their dimensions on their web site). It has a 1 in 48" twist, weighs 178 ounces (their number) or 11 pounds 2 ounces and has a 13 1/2 inch length of pull.

Why can't I see any photo's?
-
Never mind I see the original posting date.

I was at Jim Gordon,s in Glorieta last week and he had two pistol grip Hawken rifles on display along with 20+ others.

I had camera problems at the museum, but here are the pistol grip Hawken rear sight and front sight- tall and low.
