Title: Lining and binding

I am so glad I found this site! I have a few questions about lining and binding for pouches.

Does anybody glue lining to the leather in their pouches? It is stitched on the edges but doesn't it pull away in the middle?

What do you use for edge binding? can you get veg tan that thin?

Marty,

You can glue the lining material to the leather pieces. A lot of people glue it to aid in sewing the bag and lining together. I personally don't use any glue. If I need to hold the lining material and the leather together I just use a few stitches, about one every inch, to hold the lining in place. The extra stitches can usually be cut and taken out, if they show, after you have the bag all sewn together.

For the edge bindings I use thinner, softer leather like elk or deer.

I staple mine in place with a desk stapler and remove them as I sew.  Holds everything in place where you need it and you can make the staple holes disappear with a bit of burnishing on the leather.  They seal right up.

Ahhh, ok. Thanks for the info. I may have to cruise down to the old Tandy to check out thinner leather.

I always glue mine when using ticking for the liner.  If you are using something else try a test piece first to see if the glue bleeds through the material.

If you want to use a glue, try the stick glue kids use for school. It does not bleed thru on most materials.

Wheat flour and water makes a paste that is a pretty PC glue if you want
to mess with it...

And then in starvin times you can get more nourishment from eating your pouch! :D
