Here's a picture of the tang on my next project. I'm trying to replicate an original that I bought from Gibster. I just finished in letting the breech and tang. Next I will be installing the lugs and then inlet and pin. Is it really necessary to use 4 lugs or is three enough for a 42" barrel? I also include a picture of the original and then the new barrel and tang. The new tang was hand filed and then TIG welded to the flared tang.

Three lugs are fine for a 42" bbl, and so are four.

I've never put 4 lugs on a gun, but I built a few that I wish I had. The wood actually flexes and rolls a bit when your holding them by the forestock. I'm thinking 4 for any real slim rifles I do from now on. Then again, it may not help anything.

Those extended tangs are a pure pain aren't they. Looks like yours is going well. Three lugs are fine.

Patch, it's challenging. My first attempt at one of these. About 6-7 hours of in letting on the breach and tang. Also going to try a poured chevron nose cap and maybe steel patch box. Have a Dugger trigger guard and beautiful left hand Cochran lock dated 1978 That's polished tuned and ready to be put into service.
