Tim,

Benjamin Griffin was born in 1701 and was buried in 1770.  His son, Joseph, continued in the gunsmith trade until his death in 1783.  An excellent reference book is "British Gunmakers Messrs Griffin & Tow and W. Bailes, 1740 - 1790" by W.Kieth Neal and D.H.L. Back

Probably the best source is "Griffin of Bond Street", by Eric Griffin.  Very illuminating, well done book.  There were Griffins building guns from the 1720s to 1783, when Tow took over.
