Leaving for Dixon's tomorrow morning. It's an eight hour drive for me. I have a sharpening demonstration at eleven o'clock friday morning in the demonstration tent so I want to be there early enough to to get my table set up before the demonstration. Anyone that has trouble sharpening gouges, chisels, or gravers, I will show you a very easy way to sharpen all of them with your eyes shut. Sharper than you can emagine. Hope to see many of you there.

I've always been quite particular about the sharpness of my tools, and I'm pretty handy at doing so. Without stepping on your demonstration, is there any chance you might be able to post a tutorial here on ALR? I'm always interested in seeing how others do things, and for the chance to learn something new :)

Is Friday your only demonstration? I will only be there Saturday and Sunday.
-
Brian,
My sharpening demonstration is scheduled for eleven o'clock on friday in the demonstration tent , and Sat. at eleven I am doing a seminar on carving in the seminar tent. If there were enough requests and there was room in the demonstration tent on Sunday I could do the sharpening again.
Iktomi,
I will try and put a mini tutorial together for ALR after I get back.

David,
I wish you a lot of pleasure!

It would be great if you could get someone to film your demonstration then post it here.

I was going to leave early Friday morning from the Pittsburgh area but of all times for the car to break down yesterday was it. Hope to get it back tonight. I would like to see your demo as my sharpening skills definitely need improvement.

Everybody keeps talking about how great sharp tools are. I would love to find out!

Looking forward to this seminar!

Here are a few pictures of Dave showing his sharpening skill at a Dixon Gunmaker's Fair some years ago.

Clever way to sharpen a gouge!! I must be a visual learner, those pictures have a lot of information.

I have a copy of David's book on sharpening, signed and delivered by the author himself, and it's excellent. Dixon's creeped up on me and obviously I'm not making it, but those of you who do will enjoy this tutorial.

A book on sharpening by an ALR hero! Is it still in publication? What Is the title?

Had the opportunity on Sat to attend the Carving/Sharpening Class. Moving forward, I'll definitely use your sharpening technique. The simplicity of it is very intelligent and foolproof. Thank you for your effort and your time.

Agree 100%. I've always held my tools at an angle I believed was both steady as I could.....but studying the pictures has shown me how much easier I can make it on myself. Thanks!!

I want to give a huge thank you to Mr. Price. I missed his Friday seminar, but on Sunday stopped by his display. He pretty much gave me a personal sharpening demonstration. He spent over an hour with me discussing sharpening, carving, and swivel breech actions. I bought all three of his books and he signed each one. the books are well worth the money with so much information in them. Thank you again Mr. Price! it was an honor to meet you!

ONE picture is worth a thousand words. The words are a necessity but after
a lot of them the come back is sometimes an argument after giving the
benefits of years of experience. These arguments are usually from someone
who "read a book" or some such.
The way to learn is to listen to those whom you KNOW are very competent
in any field of endeavor. If we quit learning we are dead from the neck up
and THAT is a bad thing.

I caught Mr. Price's seminar on Friday and it's difficult to explain just how much it speeds up the learning curve to WATCH someone demonstrate any given skill like that. When you can combine the words with pictures, and then also watch the master perform the task?..... it's PRICELESS.
Mr. Price was struggling a bit with his vision in his left eye and I could tell it was frustrating him, but he still made what he was doing look SIMPLE.
I know it's not!.... and it's subtle movements honed (pun intended) over so many years of doing it correctly......but he still made me FEEL like it was easy.
The man could probably sharpen a bowling ball.
I bought all of his books at the show as well after the seminar and have read them cover to cover TWICE already since Friday LOL
Of course now I'm gonna put someone's kid through college at Woodcraft but that's just the price to play I guess!
I so very much appreciate the effort it takes all the masters to give those seminars.....
