Title: Colonial American Style Hunting Sword
Post by: WH1 on December 26, 2018, 08:07:03 AM
Just finished this piece, only needs to be sharpened.
I have always been interested in the Hunting swords or Cuttoes which were carried by many during the revolutionary war.
So I decided to attempt it.  This is the result of a couple of weekends of work.

The blade is 1084 forged on coal.  it is 18 1/2" x 3/16" x 1 1/4" with a 5 1/2" false edge.  Overall length including the handle is 24" exactly.  Draw filed by hand, sanded to 220 grit, normalized twice and quenched in preheated canola oil.  I heat treated it in the oven for 2 hours.
it has an Elk antler handle with iron end cap with iron nut and silver end cap.  I threaded the tang and the tapped the nut, the silver is soldered on.
The guard is one piece cut out of a 3/16" mild steel plate and then forged and and filed to finish with scallop lines cut in with files.

I cleaned all of the metal with acetone then applied cold blue and rubbed it back to the patina I wanted.

This is definitely the largest blade I have done and it was a lot of work but over all I am very pleased with the end result.

Nice work!  I’ve always wanted one of those...and that one’s a beauty!  What are you going to do for a sheath/scabbard?  How were those typically carried?

Not according to my wife.  Something about monkeys, footballs, hippos and ice dancing whatever that means.

Bravo!!  Do you use a heat treat oven?

Watched a man plunge a KA-BAR into the still beating heart of a wounded sow.

One of these would have been excellent for the job. More standoff and penetration, what’s not to like?

Nope used the oven in the kitchen after measuring to ensure it would fit.  One of the advantages of using canola oil.  I also use an external digital thermometer to ensure consistent and correct heating.  I set the piece on a couple of large firebricks.  I monitor closely through out checking the color of the steel.
For smaller blades I use a toaster oven with the digital thermometer and firebrick.  With 1084 I have not had any issues.

BRAVO -- very nicely done ;) - what's not to like about this hunting sword 8)! How thick is the blade - not wide but thickness?

3/16" at the hilt tapers to the point with a 5 1/2" false edge.

Looks like a great thing to use on snakes or for finishing off varmints or deer.

Looks good! I assume you hardened with canola oil, and then tempered in your kitchen oven?

Thank you, I preheated the canola to 120 degrees then quenched after normalizing twice.
then tempered in the kitchen oven, good thing about canola it doesn't smell so the wife doesn't get mad.
I use a digital thermometer and fire bricks to ensure a consistent temperature.

First thank you for the compliment.  I am also a big fan of them.  I will have a table at the Alabama Kentucky Longrifle Show in a couple of weeks.  I will have it there.

Hi Tim. I've had to back off a bit. Too many other projects to do and a slight health issue. I miss working in my shop though. Maybe I can get caught up one day and get back to it though.
