Howdy all,
Staring to get the parts together for another build, going for a percussion early style J&S halfstock. Barrel will be a Rice .54 34" 1 1/8 to 1" taper with hooked breech.
Planning on the L&R lock and either L&R or Davis triggers.
Talking to Pecatoncia regarding whittling up a walnut stock for me.
I know Don Stith is the resource recommended by many here but I also understand he is facing some health issues and don't want to bug him.
My question to the learned here is this-
What are my best resources for earlier style iron furniture that are reasonably accurate? I know that nothing is perfect and they will require some tweaking here and there but I also don't want to have to re invent the wheel to get something to look & work correctly.
If you have part numbers that would be great.

track of the wolf has 2 hawken parts sets a jim bridger and a kit carson both
have complete parts lists for each. they are the only source I have found for a
1 1/8 in breach plug and tang. The tang will need to be bent and mine did not fit on
the plug . i have a post going now showing how i bent mine.

My first Hawken build involved two messed up precarve stocks. I returned the first one and I cut the second one for firewood. Third try I built from a from a plank. It was far faster and easier. I had to replace the lock because the 2nd bad precarve lead me down a bad path. It was an extremely frustrating and time consuming experience
Breech plugs and tangs are hard to find right now. I'm not sure gathering parts yourself is going to pan out..
IF I were to make another I'd try the Hawken shop in Washington state. For $1400 it better be right.

I'd send an email to Don Stith if you want an authentic J & S Hawken rifle. His parts cannot be beaten. He'll tell you if he's not able to help you, for whatever reason.

Don will respond to emails, he seems to be getting better.
I'm doing one of his "St Louis Prairie Rifles, and find the parts nicely done. I was tempted to put a flintlock on her, but stuck with the percussion version.
Stock is VERY curly maple. Hard, and a bit splintery; just gotta go slow.

I just started to build a full stock Hawken flint in .50. Most of the parts I got from Pecatonica but I got some other parts from Track and MLBS. I got the barrel, lock and trigger sets in but I broke the tang trying to cold form it so I ordered another one so I am waiting for that to come in. For me the big issue is forming the tang. Taylor suggested to use the three point bending method and it worked well for the trigger plate. I think I will try that on the new tang but I will resort to using heat to bend it to shape if I can't get it right.
As far as gathering parts, I have gotten parts from RE Davis, L & R, MLBS, and a component set from Pecontonica. When I get done with this rifle I will probably do another full stock Hawken, maybe a squirrel rifle from Don's sets.
