Title: PA FOWLER FINISHED
Post by: t.caster on March 29, 2020, 06:13:12 PM
Hi all, I just finished this Chambers PA Foweler kit for "old george" ! It has a 20 ga. x 46" Rice barrel and Chambers Colonial Virginia flintlock of course and all steel furniture. He wants it for hunting and not competition shooting so he had me install a rear sight. He also wanted it dark and red! Got it!
Total time involved was 51 hours, for those who are curious about how long it takes to build a good kit. Sounds like a lot, but this was my 70th build, so I am not a beginner, I just take time to get things right.

Tom, that is a fabulous build. I bet it will be a wonderful field gun.  This isn't a negative comment on the gun, but I just wondered if it would be incorrect to angle the stock at the breech down to more closely match the octagon barrel flats ?   I've noticed this often happens on rifles, but have not seen the same treatment generally done on fowlers .

Nice clean gun.  Understated elegance. Nice touch with the barrel and tang treatment.

I like it ;D Tom has been patient and a pleasure to work with. That finish reminds me of fall almost like old sumac.

Tom and old George - that is a beautiful work of art and function.  A bit envious of your skill, Tom.

How did you get that wonderful red, Tom -it looks very deep.

Craig, that is a combination of LMF stains. Lanc. Maple, multiple coats of Ebony Toner and Cherry. I also tinted a cpl. coats of LMF Finish with ***lazirine(?) Crimson artists oil paint.

Beautiful work Tom.  Rich said it best "understated elegance".  Your "taking the time to get things right" really shows.  Great fowler.

Really lovely fowler Tom.  These Chambers' fowling guns are nice builds, and super fun to shoot with either shot or ball.

Lovely rifle... You've sold me on my next build!  Partial to Chamber's kits so have been looking over their Fowling pieces and this is the one... As long as the world does not go to $#*! in a hand basket, this will be my winter project.

Nice looking gun. I had one in walnut 20+ years ago. It slapped my face hard so I sold it. However they do look nice.

How do you get the grey finish ?
It's just water diluted Super Blue from Birchwood-Casey. Applied with a scotchbrite pad or steel wool. Even diluted it starts out pretty dark blue....just keep rubbing until you get it where you like it.

Tom,

Really nice job.  Your build here proves a nicely built plane gun is also a work of art. A gun  does not need a lot of silver and  carving to be a treasure.  All your years of experience shows in this gun.  This gun will give someone  a hunting  and shooting companion for many years.

Keb:  I'm curious about your comment.  You say yours slapped your cheek.  Was it a Chambers' PA fowler or some other fowling piece.  I've built four of these and none of them slap the cheek.  In fact, they shoot like a rifle in form.  I shoot 85 gr. FFg GOEX with the .600 ball out of mine, and it is very comfortable to shoot.

Taylor, depending on a persons build, the pitch of the butt angled forward like on this kit could be the reason he is being slapped on the cheek.
