Title: Thinning Permalyn finish
Post by: sdilts on July 07, 2020, 04:02:26 AM
I have a bottle of Permalyn finish that I would like to thin down to use as a sealer. I thought I had some sealer but it turned out to be the finish. Anyway, what should I use to thin it?

When I used to use Permalyn, (it is a fine product) I found the shelf life of a partial used can was very short.  If it’s thickened, you may have trouble getting it to dry.
I’d throw it away, and buy a new can.

Here is the solution to that problem:

I'm going off subject here, but consider marbles as a filler to bring the liquid level to the top of the can. Their cheap. When your done with the can dump them in thinner, clean them up and give em to the grand kids. Since they don't us batteries they won't have a clue what to do with em.

Interestingly, I was on LMF's website and they stated that Permalyn finish does not skin over. They must have changed something because it has always skinned over on me. That's why I started using Bloxygen. That stuff works! The finish I was using was a brand new can, I was just wanting to thin it down to the consistency of their sealer. Their website does not mention anything about thinning it.

I have always used mineral spirits as a thinner. Real mineral spirits not the odorless kind.

Looks like a trip to the hardware store for mineral spirits.
