42 inch colerain barrel is it ok to only install 2 barrel tennions I'll probably solder them on
The waist sure looks thin I'd hate to ruin a barrel ?
Thanks

On a 42" barrel I would go with three tenons minimum, and sometimes do 4. If you do three, place one roughly 3" from the muzzle, 8-9" from the breech, and split the difference, which should avoid the narrowest part of the barrel. What size is the bore and how heavy is the breech and waist? Dovetails don't need to be any deeper than about .04" for a rifle barrel, and I usually run them shallower yet. Soft soldering is fine if you're not confident in your dovetail abilities.

2 is not enough. I dislike the stock kind of flexing vertically, which it would do with just 2 underlugs.

Thanks it's a c weight 54 I'll go with 3

C weight barrel will be no problem , just use Eric’s suggestion on placement and you’ll be fine.

If using only 3, please layout your thimble locations also. Be sure the middle thimble misses the middle tenon. Moving the tenon an inch either way of center between the front and rear usually works.

On 42" and longer bbls, I use 4 bbl lugs......all are dovetailed except sometimes the lug at the waist is soldered on w/ an "A" weight bbl w/ a max bore. Why skimp on the number bbl lugs...they're easy to install.....Fred
