I’m on the wire inlay portion of this build. I strive for this part of the build and when I get there, it wears me out. This has by far been my most intense build and the most fun. It has a pattern conglomeration of two different Kuntz guns and the H Rupp decorations. I’m really hoping to get a good shooting deer rifle this time.

Fantastic!

It worked out great. I cut the hinge soldered it up and drilled the hole. It wasn’t bad at all. I really like the weight and feel of it better than the flimsy ones on the market.

I give up, did you and Mr Brooks come up with a domed lid box? Please explain the mystery!
Any ways, nice job so far. Looks to be a nice piece of wood as well.

I have them for sale. It's cast from an EK pattern.

Looking good, Mike.

It came from Mike Brooks’s collection of for sale furniture. Anyone looking for brass, I’d put him on top of the list. Everything bends, drills, files great and gets a beautiful look quickly. It’s the best quality stuff I’ve dealt with. I don’t know enough about metallurgy to know what the difference is but it’s good stuff.

Mike sure like the way it's looking...Nice Work... Oldtravler

Mike it's looking good. I've tried wire inlay a couple of times but and it never turned out well. Looks like you have a pretty good handle on it.

Thanks Brian. I tapered every piece but you can’t tell in the pictures. I cut up a hacksaw blade and made little 1 1/2” stabbing tools this time. The stabbing part is about a 1/16” or so. Some curved and some strait. I think it was Taylor who had a post on making them. For me, brass is a lot easier than silver. The silver rolled and smashed and was a big pain in the neck.

Very Nice! Looks Great!

Mike, that’s gonna be another beauty! I can’t wait to see it in person the next time we get together at Boonesborough. Maybe we should do that twice a year? Hint, Hint...

Mikes,
I recognize that one now. Had one before, but traded it off. Should have kept it.
Mr Brooks,
You’ve added quite a line of castings. I couldn’t find pricing however.
Do you have a price list somewhere?
-
On to drawing. This rifle has a ton of it. I’ve been erasing and drawing most of the evening and still I’m not satisfied. I think Herman doodled a little on this gun. There’s several lines I’ve left out.

That's going to be a lot of carving. Look forward to seeing the finished result.

I have even more stuff now, just got a big batch back from the foundry. It will all be posted with prices in the next couple days. TG's $35. BP's $30. Boxes $60-$75. Sdeplates $15.

Thanks Mike!

That's going to be a beauty! Very nice work so far!

It needs a lot of cleaning up before cutting. The acanthus leaves, scrolls and volutes are rough but I’ll get them better.
-
Looking really busy, Mike. If that's what you want, have at it.
Should be quite the engraving indeed.
-
Should be interesting....are you going to cut that with a parting tool?

I plan on using the parting tool for the majority of it and gouges for depth and chip carving. Some of the little wiry lines might get stabbed in. What do you think? I’m wide open on suggestions. Here’s some more recent pics after staring at it and making corrections.

Going to be a combo of incised and relief?
-
Going to be a combo of incised and relief?
The original appears to have some/very little relief around the comb. Several spots have depth added but I don’t think it’s enough to consider it relief. It’s not pushed up past the incised line. “Hope that makes sense.” I can’t tell if it’s been molded inside the incise lines or it’s 200 years of age that wore off the finish and knocked down the angles. I may try to round some spots on the volutes with a scraper. I’m still staring at it. This piece of wood is hard enough to do anything.
-
Around that wrist inlay, be careful not to go too deep if you do raised carving there. You'll isolate that inlay and it'll look odd. Off to a great start.
-
Thanks Taylor. After using the parting tool, I doubt I relief carve any of it. I’ll try to cut some depth but it’s looking like I don’t need to have it stand out anymore than it is.

I study your guns. I may not know much but I’m a quick learner. Ha
-
Cmon Mike, don’t wimp out now. You KNOW relieving that is the right thing!
Gonna be a beauty!
-
That star was intimidating. Just noticed that I need to cut the cheek piece lines. Looks like it will be ready for deer season. ;D ;

Yes, great job with parting tool and I agree you certainly are a quick learner.

I don’t want to do one of those that curls up over the comb. Nice job.

Here’s the latest progress. I have the ramrod and touch hole liner to install yet. Hopefully I can sight it in this weekend.
