Hello, been a while since I posted, but have a question, I got a great deal on a swamped rice barrel, and a beautiful Dunlap maple stock blank.....question is this, the barrel is 48", .50 cal., And the blank is 63" long, that would leave about 15" of wood behind the breech....is this enough for a rifle?

It may be a couple inches short. You could lay your lock in position and mark your trigger position then measure. A flat buttplate would help get the most length out of it.
-
Look at some other rifles and see where the front trigger is located relative to the breech. Then mark that approximate location on your blank. Measure from that to your LOP which would include the buttplate. That will give you an idea of you how much wood you need behind the breech.
-
You can always add a couple inches on the front.

According to the stock on my Beck - 15" behind the breech would give a 13 3/8" (approx) trigger pull. Depending on the length of the forend cap,
you could add 1/2" or more there, unseen, and extend that trigger pull by that amount over 13 3/8".
Thus, while not having an abundance of wood to work with, it should be enough - if cared for.
Incidentally, this rifle has a 14" pull length.

Just cut the barrel back a tad if needed. As mentioned you have the nosecap that would cover a splice.
-
Of course, if needed, you could always put one of those big, ugly red rubber recoil pads on it to add some length. ;D

I usually figured a rough length for a blank would be 16" plus the bbl length. Just measured my latest Bucks County LR which has a 13-3/4" LOP and a 46" bbl and the dim behind the bbl to the outside of the Bplate is 16".....just made it. The total stock length is 62". So perhaps 17" plus bbl length would be safer......Fred

I usually add at least 16 inches to the barrel length at minimum .
