Thought i would introduce myself, as I will be hanging out here in future. I am 61 and It has been 15 years since actively shooting muzzle loaders, a move from Southern Illinois to Southeastern Indiana disrupted the habit. Recently I gave my flintlock to my son-in-law when he returned from a recent extended cruise on USS Abraham Lincoln (carrier). He is a shooter and the joy on his face made the gift that much more special. But, as luck would have it, giving that rifle away brought back the desire to shoot a flintlock....almost immediately. While I did build a Hawken half stock kit percussion rifle 20 years ago- still have it- I am not a builder. I am that guy that got the parts together well enough to work, browned the barrel,aligned the sights and called it good enough. I joined the NMLRA a few days ago and have been searching the web to get a feel for how the muzzle loader world has changed since 15 years have passed. I guess, if I want another flintlock, I am going to have to build it. This seems like a good place to hang out.

I'm not far away from where you are, in spirit.
I spent 20 years away from the hobby and am now getting back into it with both feet, starting at the age of 56.
My first project was a Tennessee Barn Gun with as little metal bits as I could get away with, because I wasn't confident in my inleting skills, and frankly, because I love the look of the simple guns, and they are somewhat native to Tennessee, where I moved to last year.
My current, and second project is an early Lancaster from Jim Chambers, and it represents the kind of rifle that the initial settlers brought to my area.
I hope you find what you are looking for in this hobby; I know I have.

If you have not built a rifle before consider one one Jim Kibler's kits. If you want a little more challenge than Jim's kits offer I suggest one of Jim and Barbie Chambers kits, both top notch.

You can sign up for one of Mike Brooks’s Kibler kit classes at Friendship this summer. You’re going to go home with a ready to shoot rifle when you’re done with the class. I believe that the first class is booked but another is scheduled for mid summer. I’ll be there helping Mike.

Welcome to ALR, Wayne. No time like now to get back into black powder. I agree that the Kibler kits are about as easy as any period correct rifle kit can get. Don't waste time you can put to good use shooting a flintlock.

Thanks to all for the great welcome. I especially appreciate LuVerne's comment. I have always figured the rifles of yore, the kind that went out the front door with everybody in the family, did not appear to be that pretty. I always get distracted by the overall elegance of the lines of the various rifles, beyond that, I've not been one to dwell on the detail.......other than the detail of going "Boom" when the trigger is pulled.
I have noticed that the depth of my ignorance in shapes/silhouettes of the many various of the flintlock rifles is profound. Switching from page to page in viewing the various models makes it difficult to determine which rifle profile appeals to me the most:......viewed one and a time, they seem to all appeal, equally, to my eyes. Is there any resource where one can view many of the various silhouettes at the same time?
I also appreciate the references for kit buying. I looked at the Kibler sight. I have been hovering mostly around the Pecatonica River site.
