I am looking for some more information on Jacob Hoak. I have one of his rifles and I know of the walnut one listed in Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle of the Golden age. Mine is the one pictured in Kauffman's book. I have only seen one other one besides those two. Does anyone have more information on Jacob Hoak or know of other examples of his work where there may be photos available? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
John

Kevin,
Thank you Kevin. I will look it up. I am picking up a copy of that book from a friend of mine sometime this weekend as I don't have that one.

Hey utseabee, Maybe you could post that rifle up here for us to see? Not many of his guns around and it would be a real treat to see!

I need to do a better job of taking pics, but this is all I have right now. I am going to take a shot at building one and also have one built by a real gun builder. It seems to take me years to finish a project.

Great rifle, you are fortunate.
Jim Whisker's Gunsmiths of Lancaster County pages 122-125, has three different Hoak rifles.

There is nicely carved Jacob Hoak rifle in Masterpieces of the American Longrifle, The Joe Kindig, Jr. Collection.

Jacob Hoake was an early Lancaster rifle and lock maker who worked during the Rev. War. I too have one of his rifles which has incised carving. Hoake lived a long time and may have worked up to his last years. I have seen and handled no more than six of his pieces with only three being carved. On that basis we can assume that his work is rare. It may be the the majority of his work was devoted to lock making. Whisker has some good information on Hoake in his 'Lancaster' book. As I recall he worked primarily in Strasburg. Nice find and it is greatly appreciated that you brought it in to be seen.

Thank you for all of the information. It looks like I will be adding to my book collection too. :D

There are pix of two Hoak rifles in Behold the Longrifle by by Chandler and Whisker, and a carved example in Behold the Longrifle Again by Whisker.
Kentucky Rifle Patchboxes Vol. 2 by Chandler & Whisker has pix of 3 patchboxes.
Kindig's Thoughts on the Ky Rifle has some info and pix of one rifle, and the Pennsylvania-
Kentucky Rifle by Kauffman has one.
Finally, the Frazier Museum in Louisville Ky has (had ?) a Hoak on display. Sorry for the quality of the pix, taken of a display case.

In "Powder Horns and their Architecture" there is one full-length image of a Hoak fowler on page 135. Mr. Grant shares a story about his purchase of it and hunting with it.

John is bringing his Hoak to my March rifle building class and I can hardly wait to roll it around for a first hand look. It is a fabulous rifle.

Jim,
I am looking forward to the class. I just got euthanized on Wednesday ;) (COVID vaccine) and should be good to go.
