Title: pewter nose cap
Post by: Dowrat on January 01, 2021, 07:46:48 PM
Just poured my first pewter nose cap. Didn't come out too bad, I guess. I plan to use Chamber's oil finish on the stock. My question is how to do it. Tape off the pewter and finish around it, or finish right over the pewter? Thanks for any replies.

Just apply right over it. The stain and finish will rub right off.

Thanks smylee. Ken G's tutorial was a great help for my first try at pewter.

Are you going to be able to pull that rammer out?

I think it’s a very neat and sleek design and appears executed perfectly. Should be able to slide the ram out from below provided it isn’t too tight.

could you  file off the skirts and about a half inch of the wood behind the end cap. that would give your fingers more rod to grab.

Looking good. Had the same thoughts about RR access. Also, if you slightly round the machined corners in the crown(lands and grooves), just a small amount, it will be perfect (to my eye).

Thanks for the replies and suggestions everyone. Yeah, ramrod was "doable" but snug. I reamed it out a little with sandpaper wrapped around a small dowel. All good now.
