Title: Cape gun

This is the cape gun that was the subject of a previous post. The stock was broken beyond repair. I restocked it from a blank. It’s 14ga x 38 cal. Shoots a .375 round ball. Bore are excellent.

Now that is a cool gun. I cannot help but wonder if it was meant for a conical ball.

I believe round ball. It’s 1-42” twist, and .010 deep rifling.

Definitely round ball. Interesting calibre combination.
Take the running squirrel,  bunny or flying grouse with shot, or if standing, a round ball.

Love those combination guns.  Great fun to hunt with.  I have one in .41x12ga and another in .38x16ga.  Both have real good bores and shoot well.  You did a great job of restocking yours. James Levy

Love the .38 caliber concept using .375 round balls. Gonna have to get one someday.

Here in Ohio, both barrels are legal for deer.

These are cool hunting guns. I think the American term was combination gun.  I bought a similar gun in a auction. It had a SS trigger for the right barrel but the rifle barrel had been bored smooth at some time. I would have shot the gun but when I proved it it blew lower rib down for about 2" at the breech from a unseeable pin hole. This was about 50 years ago and I don't recall where or when it was sold.
I failed to buy a superposed double some years ago at the Cody Gun Show. It was about 20 bore and 38 rifled. What still irritates me is that it was marked L.L. Hepburn. I KNEW not buying it was a mistake. But I was not very flush at the time.

Nice job on the restocking!  Interesting how many of the combos listed on this thread are such a mismatch in bore size.  My cape gun has matching 58 cal or 24 gauge bores with the right barrel smooth and the left straight rifled.  I agree it is a fun gun to hunt with!  I hunted some of our regular firearms season and all of our muzzleloader season with mine last year.  I had a patched ball in the straight rifled barrel for deer and a shot load in the smooth barrel for grouse and pheasant.  Had a few close encounters with grouse, but never did get a decent shot opportunity.  I did end up getting a deer with it.  I'm glad to know there are a few other folks out there who own and still use these cool old guns!
