Title: What style is the flintlock?
Post by: Ezra on March 31, 2021, 01:00:23 AM
I had these photos in my saved album because I love the profile.  Credit to Mr. Allen Martin who built this beautiful firearm.  What school is it?  Lehigh county, Bucks county or some other?  Thanks guys.

It’s a Lehigh schimmel by Allen Martin.

Thank you.  Is “Shimmel” analogous to a barn gun, or just a simple, albeit effective, every-mans gun?

Schimmel is a simple rifle with no extra parts. I.e. entry pipe, buttplate.
Allen makes the architecture speak for the fancy.

If I were to build a gun like this I would call it a K.I.S.S.* rifle.

I dont know for sure but the North hampton co area of the lehigh valley is where that profile is most comon. I could be wrong. Bucks co is also in lehigh valley but it's school dosent look like what The Rupp's or Moll's were building.I think this one you have is in the flavor of the last two mentioned. I have an alamengenal piece by one of the Hess family of gun smiths also a lehigh valley gun and it looks like neither one of the aforementioned. So calling a gun a Lehigh can be a safe bet but what school of Lehigh we need to be more specific. I am still trying to sort out the Douphin and York school of gun making. :o Where is Eric Kettenburg when you need him.

Okay Anthony !!
I'm here ..

I'm not sure where the valleys start and stop ... Bucks Co rifles ain't from this area as most tend to believe even though some have similar details as the Lehigh co rifles.
I just finished 2 more of these schimmels !!

Lehigh rifle as Rupps and the Molls are from Allentown & Macungie heading east through Bethlehem all the way towards Easton ..
Bucks Co rifles further to the south are more from lower Perkiomion Valley .. Think Doylestown , Perkasie and Quakertown ..

Eric .. where are you ??? You smarter feller in these things !!!!
