Clicked on several peoples profiles and got an error message and this smarta$$ remark that sounded like it might be an after 3pm message from tom:
"Many apologies, but you can't view just any profile." >:(
What gives?? :o
-
Dunno. It's after 3pm, so I can't help you.
You're logged in, or else you wouldn't be able to write the post.
Logic engine is hitting on all four cylinders.
On the main board you should be able to click on any member's name and their profile will come up. Is that where you're having the trouble, or is it with the 'profile' button at the top of the page, to the right of our dear logo?

I think the board has been set to hid profiles from other members or was that guest? Now I'm not sure but I remeber seeing a setting.
Ken
-
I am logged in and clicking a name on the mane board and get that message. Just did it with your name above Ken.
-
TIM,
Try it now. I changed one of the settings.
Ken

Tim
I just clicked on your profile and it came up as did Acers

I had it set that regular members and guests could not see peoples profiles. I wanted to make sure it worked. We need to discuss how we are going to request members to fill out their profile. I know for sure that there are members that absolutely do not want their personal information available on the internet. I am not sure how to handle that with some of our moderators wanting all the data filled out. I can set the board so that guests and regular members can not view the personal data but moderators and admins can.
Personally I don't see why we could not require a valid name and a non-specific location such as Dennis Glazener central Virginia for those that don't want to give more info. Then we could allow members to view the profiles but not the guests that have not joined. What do you all think?
Dennis
-
Dennis,
To me the whole idea of having PMs is to mask a person's personal information.
I'm for full disclosure on registration and then member's using the PM system to communicate with other members. They can exchange emails then if needed.
Just my thoughts. I know some hate the PM system but it is secure.
-
Ok do I understand you correctly. We set the board where guests and regular members profiles (personal info etc) can not be seen (only by moderators/admins) then each person will use PM to exchange further personal info such as location/email etc? What do others think?
Dennis
-
Yes, that is correct. Then everyone's personal information is protected. If i were a collector I don't think I would want that info out there.
-
We should put name age, location/cityavailable for all registered members. No email address visible. We can start a conversation with PM and then with mutual agreement go to regular email. I want to be able to see who is saying what. On the MLML forum we all use our real names. No "handles"
-
Actually the lists of interests/ expertise are useful too. Maybe we just upload resumes..hehehe. People should be responsible enuf to put what they want and leave off what they want to protect.
-
I still cannot see anyone's profile but my own!! :-\
-
Its Friday 2:10 pm and I still can't see any profiles.. >:(
-
Tim, I think Dennis is testing this out still. Last I knew, anyway. Hang in there.
T
-
Just harrassing you!!
-
It's after 3.
Tim, harassing me AGAIN? I thought you'd given up on that.
-
Never!! But it is 4pm now and I am going to go home and drinkkkkkk..wait til later tonight!!
This is really comming along. When the profil viewing is sorted out, the theme and the archives we should be about ready to go eh??

above is Ken. Below is my post

I guess not everyone is ok with what Ken proposed. I don't really care since I have always had real data in my profile and have no problem with folks knowing it. But there are others that adamantly are opposed to posting it. So how are we going to set the board up?
-
I don't agree with hiding the profiles. Just don't show the person's email address. use the system email/PM for that so we can choose who we give our email to. :)
I want to see who ss writing, where they are from, how old they are, and their areas of interest or expertise. Otherwise it is hard to calibrate their input. I realize the individual has control over what they write and its veracity , but I feel the folks on this system can take care of themselves without such a restrictive rule.
Frankly I prefer that people use their real names as usernames. Someone who is so secretive about themselves that this would provide too much exposure probably should stay off of the internet ::) Now in Acer's case I know we need to make an exception!! ;D ;D :o
-
I understand that some folks a re really touchy about giving out personal info.
real e-mail is a requirement.
1) so that you can set up your account
2) so that I can write you letters if you've been bad.
3) is not visible to general public, but can be accessed by messaging, as Ken may have said.
4) notification of upgrades, cancellation of account, etc.
Age? sex? Location? These need not be required fields. I would just lie about my age, anyway.
I like location, for if I am traveling, I can set up a visit with other members.
-
Dad Gum Acer musta staid off the sauce this afternoon....
What Acer said!!
-
But Tim in the last post you made you didn't want the email to show. I am confused and we have only heard from 4 moderators. What about the others? What will the requirements be for the profile and will we allow guests and other regular members to see each others profiles? I think the member has the option whether his email address is made public but if we block seeing his profile it would not show anyway.
I think we should set the board to email the new member and make him activate his account based on RECEIPT of the email. That can be done with a board option and will verify that he has given a valid email that he READS or he will not be able to register as a member here.
Dennis
-
Dennis, perhaps I wasn't clear. The forum allows me to choose whether anyone can see my eamil address. I choose no, realizing that Mods will have access to it. Everything else thanomally shows in the profile shoild show if I click on someones name. They don't have to fill everything that is optional
-
I like your email authorization test for authenticity
-
Hmm, interesting subject. I see good points on both sides. On ALR.com I like being able to see who is posting what, where they're from, age, profession, etc. Still, all of that is currently optional on the old forum. I can understand some people not wanting to put all that information up, but they often do fill out the little "bio" section.
I'm in favor of keeping things viewable to other registered members, but not to guests (is that possible to do?). Likewise, maybe you can strongly recommend that new members fill out their profile, but not make it mandatory. In the fine print before registering, you've already listed what's acceptable and not. Why not say that most members are more willing to respond if you have a profile fully filled out. That's certainly how it works in the old forum, even though it's not written anywhere.
I too like the email test for authenticity. Can that be set to happen after the user has typed in that jumbled code as well? (double security I guess).
Tim, save a drink for me, I could really use a Mai Tai, or anything with rum!
-
I'm for blocking email addresses and personal information. I too like being able to see things like websites, what field a person's in.
Maybe there is a compromise in there somewhere.
ken
-
I'd like to see full disclosure for acceptance, then block email from general viewing and restrict even that to members.
I keep getting confused with new posts being at top of scroll instead of bottom. Is that something I can change?
Don
-
Don,
Go to your Profile
Then click look layout preferences or something like that.
There is a check box you need to uncheck.
show most recent post at the top
-
Thanks
I am easily confused
-
see the poll at the top of the page... maybe as Mods you can see alot of personal info tha we non-mods can't see anyway...... when I look at what is available on the Personal Profile that is public on the form it is opnly what I choe to share....the system does not show my email address cause I checked a box on the ppage where I entered my email that said "Don't show it!""
-
Hi Guys,
I kind of like the old alr.com profile system.
I don't mind putting down my age but not my birth date (then you will know the truth)
I like putting in info I don't mind showing everyone but don't want to have to fill things out I don't want to.
I use to like the ability to quickly check on the profile of the guy that was posting if I didn't know him.
Nice to know what his real name is & his location age and a brief bio.
On this new list I can't do that ( but I know who you are!) But in the future when we grow it would be nice to know who is jabbering.
Just my 2 cents

I will often look someone up I don't know. A little more info before sending him/her some parts or pictures. I don't think all of the info should be a requirement, but if you don't fill your info out, Don Stith won't answer your questions, or I won't send you any stuff.
Required: e-mail address, real name*, approximate location(not address).
*this can be faked by those who learned to lie at an early age.
The real particulars can be exchanged by private e-mail when you wish to contact someone.
I think I said this already.Perhaps my mind is going, and it may be apparent to everyone else but me.
-
Probably so Acer. But I still can'rt see any profiles but my own... I would like to know a little about some folks who post. the profiles on the ALR worked great...cept some people are bashful!! ::)
-
Tim, I can see your profile just fine.
-
Jim, you can fool the info by putting down a false date. I don't know of anyone else who would dare do this, but it works. Your avatar, tho', tells the story. A picture doesn't lie, unless it's been photoshopped.
-
Tim, I can see your profile just fine.
Yeah! Yeah! Moderators!!!!!!!! ::)
-
Tim, you still can't others profiles? hmmm.
I just went and looked t the controls, and could find nothing to enable or dis-able.
There is a thing which keeps GUESTS from viewing our profiles. Is there any chance you are a guest? Can you sign up as a new member, fill out profile etc, and see if you can view profiles?
Jim F, can you see others profiles?
-
When I click on your or anyone elses profile I get this message:
"An Error Has Occurred!
Many apologies, but you can't view just any profile. "
Did you put me on time out like you did Cody????
:'( :'(
-
Tim I just modified my last post, read that.
I don't know what happened to Cody. I think the great fresh air flowing off the Tundra may have addled his 'computer'. :D
At heart, I am evil.

I logged out and entered as a Guest and I can read everyone's profile!!!
-
Well, we can't have guests seeing everyone's profile. But it is one of those controls. I don't want to do too much messin around or Dennis will slap me.
Tim, if you log in as you, can you see others profiles?
-

No Sir, I just get the error message..Same as Jim
-
All right, I changed another setting: Allow non-administrators to hide their online status?
I changed the guest one back to original.
Can you see my profile now?
-
I logged out and logged back in. Still cannot see any profile except my own.
-
Tom,
Same here I can't see profiles when I'm logged in.
Has to be one of those controls What do you have as options? maybe it would ring a be with me
Also Sorry if I just brought all this up again but I missed out on the earlier post.
I did like the old site profiles I'm not sure if we can get anything like it but I rather see the guys age location and little bio before I start busting his chops online Slim sense of security that he wasn't an axe murderer ( not like they tell the truth)
Sorry
Jim
-
Yes if I log out I see everyones...... hey I also see that you can see all I want to see when you view a profile so forget most of my gripping!!!!!
-
Tim, when I log off, I can read everyone's profiles, too. That's not right.
Tom
-
I also can't see profiles when I'm logged in but can when logged out.
-
I also see profiles when I am logged OUT, but not when logged in.
-

Tom/Dennis: It is still the same :o :o ??? ;) ;D
-
Can't see any profiles whether I'm logged in or logged out?????
Jeff
-
I just logged out and can not see any profiles.
I can see them while logged on.
Ken
-
I'm kind of confused here. Are we able to see profiles like the old board? I can't see any, logged in or out.
Thanks,
Bill
-
Click on a person's name and see what comes up.
-
Ken, Here's the massage, "Many apologies, but you can't view just any profile. "
Bill
-
same here, can't see another persons profile logged in or out
-
I cannot read profiles logged on or off.
-
You should be able to read member profiles now.
Dennis
-
Dennis, I don't care what Tom says about you.........
You are on top of it!!!
Thanks for getting this straightened out . It adds immeasureably..... especially for knowing who the non-bashful folksare!!
