Go Runar! More fun. :) God Bless, Marc
-
Runar, tell us about the rear sights. They look like they are attached with a strap around the barrel. Is this so? Is this common?
-
Two awesome old guns. If they could only talk.
-
Runar, these are two good looking guns. What caliber are they. I like the shorter one quite a bit.
-
Hi all and thank you! Robert Wolfe, yeas its strapet around the barrel and was usual on smoothbore hunting guns! alacan, the short one is cal 56 and barrel l 35-1/4 and the longest is cal 65 and barrel l 39 both smootbores!I made a new mainspring who was missing.

That was also the common way that rear sights were placed on Spanish guns. They were loathe to compromise the integrity of their barrels in any way. That is why their barrels were attached to their stocks using barrel bands.
-
A good and simple military style lock with a serious half cock position.
That rear sight looks like it could be slid along the barrel to compensate
for different levels of shooter eyesight.
Your copying and restorations show a high level of ability that is really
great.I have never got involved in restoration on old guns but as a young
man I was involved in mechanical restoration of car engines and one boat
that had 2 big straight eight cylinder engine.
Thank you for all these great postings foe all to see.

French gun makers also attached rear sights like that occasionally during the 17th-19th century. It tended to be on high end guns though.
