Post by: bama on October 04, 2021, 06:50:29 PM

Jim I commend you for taking on that many students by yourself.  Brooks and I will be working with 6 in an upcoming class. He and I are both junk after a full day of instruction. It's a labor of love for sure.

Jim's a thoughtful Master for sure...if you look closely you can see he even provided a candle so they could work deep into the night!  ;)

It has been a great class so far with everyone making good progress on their projects. Stoner It is tuff on one man to teach that many students by yourself but very rewarding especially when you see how much they progress over the course of the week. Most of these students have been coming to my fall class for the last 4 years. They have become more like family instead of students. I must be doing OK as a teacher when your students bring homemade Gumbo to class 😜.

It don’t get much better than that. That’s some serious grazing there my friend.!!!!!
Those Mississippi boys should hold some night classes on making gumbo, it appears they have that mastered. I can’t build a rifle worth a hoot, but I know how to handle a bowl of gumbo and some cornbread.

👍

Jim, those are the same type of guys who would butter-up their teacher with an apple, but more sophisticated with the bowls of gumbo and cornbread.

If I'd known of the eats, I might have made a better effort to come visit.

Looks like all the guys are making great progress - 'cause they have a great teacher!

Bama, Congrats on the start of the class. When I taught the Kentucky Rifle Building night class at the local tech college we had to have at least 10 students or the class was cancelled. We only taught a 3 hour class one evening a week, but we did try and run the whole school year. It was difficult for students to finish a rifle in 2 semesters unless they developed the confidence to work on their own. I think I learned as much as the students over the years if I couldn't answer a question that didn't involve the physical building of the rifle. Carving wasn't a problem, but I did have problems getting the students to jump in and start engraving.  I really enjoyed the interaction with guys of similar interests.

We had a good week in class and it's hard to believe that it's over. Everybody made good progress on their projects and we even got to shoot Sid's Bear Pistol. Here are a few pictures of the class and their projects.

Sid's Bear Pistol. 45 Cal x 15" long barrel by Charlie Burton of FCI barrels. Lock is a Chamber's late Ketland. German silver guard, ram rod pipe and stock came from TVM Jack Garner. Sid made the trigger plate and the trigger. We did not get to put sights on it but we shot it anyway.

Paul was working on a TVM Jack Garner fowler parts set. He got the barrel, lock, trigger, side plate, butt plate and ram rod pipes installed. Not to shabby for 5 days work.

Bob is working on a Lehigh rifle. I forgot to ask Bob where he got his parts. He started with stock blank that had the barrel inlet. Bob got the lock, trigger, trigger guard, side plate, butt plate, ram rod thimble's installed and the stock about 75% rough shaped.

Sandy is working on a Matt Avance Virginia rifle parts set. Sandy got his tang inlet, Lock, Trigger, Tigger guard, side plate, Vent liner installed.

That’s a lot of gun building for 5 days.
