Title: Relief carving instruction.
Post by: Rt5403 on October 06, 2021, 03:41:07 AM
So I am going to be putting a New England Fowler kit as soon as it comes in. I am looking for some resources and instructions on period carvings moldings. Any good videos or books out there?

Go to the Tutorials section here. Then the woodworking area. Plenty in there.

Hi RT,
Here is an original example and my NE fowler inspired by it.  The second thread shows the building process and how I did some of the decoration.  The Hawk fowler is about as decorated as you will find for a mid 18th century New England gun.  Most are fairly plain.

Here's one of Chambers New England fowling kits I did some years ago. The carving is plain and simple. The beaver tails on this one may not be 100% historically correct for New England. This gun was shattered in three places while in the kit form. Through the wrist, through the lock area and through the area of the rear ramrod pipe, total wreck. All invisible now. I should teach a "glue a wreck back together class"..... ;D
