Title: My First Long Rifle Huntingdon County?
Post by: maharsb on October 06, 2021, 04:03:38 PM
I have always been fascinated with old long rifles. I always wanted one and finally broke down and got one. I got this one because I liked the look of it. Can anyone please help me with any information on it, like what style it is, where it might have been made, and if there are any characteristics that might identify this to a school or builder.

Thanks,

Steven

Nice one. I like the lock, especially the hammer

Agree with the 'Huntingdon County' folks here as a place of origin. One dead giveaway is the chamfered forward end of the butt plate. Nice gun and a good first rifle for building a collection.
Thank you for posting it here to be admired. Good luck in your future collecting efforts.

Thank you all for the comments and information. It does have similarities to the J. Stapleton gun especially the star. I was looking up other Huntington County rifles and the patch box engraving looks similar to some Joseph Douglass guns I saw. Does anyone else see any similarities? I really don’t have anything to base this on. I don’t really know much I am just trying to learn by reading and looking at pictures. Trying to look at different styles and trying be able to tell them apart.

Thanks again,

Steven
