Title: Kits
Post by: Stoner creek on October 06, 2021, 05:55:03 PM
As I had stated earlier, I’m not really a kit guy but I couldn’t say no to a bargain. This is a Chambers Early York kit that I bought from Blackpowder Barbie during the spring shoot at Friendship. The only asides from the kit in its original form was the addition of set trigger and use of Chambers Lancaster trigger guard.
This is a “cosmetic second”. Translation, it had a small non-structural check in the buttstock. If any of you are interested in a kit build at a real bargain give Chambers a call. I should have picked up one of their Fowler kits last month!
Enjoy!

Brother Wayne, that guns is some kind of beautiful.  Tell us more please.

What's the barrel in that one?

I like double set triggers, so I like your choice on this one.

Just the right amount of carving while letting the lines do the talking.

What finishes did you use?   Aqua Fortis plus stains?  Great color.

Someone has a fine gun coming their way.

God Bless,   Marc

That’s the Rice Southern Classic barrel in 50 cal. I haven’t weighed it but it makes a light rifle. Around 7 lbs I would guess.
That’s a hard maple stock colored with Transtint Honey Amber as a background color, iron nitrate as the main color and topped with LMF Lancaster maple and promptly wiped off. Finish is Formbys tung oil finish.
I’ve got the gun shooting at 4 o clock in the 10 ring offhand at 25 yards today. I think that I’ll leave it there and let whoever buys it fine tune it.
This was a fun project. Thanks for your comments!!

I'll have to give David Rase some cudos here. Whenever I  get the opportunity I like to get another set of eyes on a project.  Danged if he wasn't spot on with his suggestions. The changes he recommended were very subtle but big in the long run. It's easy to get blinded by my own vision.  I'm lucky to have another good set of eyes to critique the work. I'll bet the same thing was going on back in the 18th and 19th centuries. I really like good advice.

David does have a very good sense of just the right amount but not too much. I think that is called “good taste”.   :)  Good on you Wayne for sharing credit for a beautiful project.

That's a beautiful rifle, Wayne. Strikes me as being a very hard piece of maple. Nice finish.

That's a Beauty, the finish makes the wood look even harder.

That’s a slick looking rifle. I like the color real well. I have  a rifle with that barrel, makes a nice light deer gun.

That's a beauty, Wayne...good luck with it.

This gun is a great example of the high standards coming out of Chambers.  What they call a second is usually just some persnickety ding which Stoner obviously proves can be gotten around.

My best Lil Feller started out as a second stock at a good price, and the nick Barbie called a slight gash sanded away altogether.

Now, if they only made Black Powder....

Very nice work-smooth and crisp. The carving and stock finish are especially well done.
