Title: Finishing time for a new rifle
Post by: Bob Gerard on October 16, 2021, 10:11:31 PM
I have been working on this Kibler Colonial for a little while as a side-project. I finished the carving and grain-raising yesterday and today I applied some color, using a mix of powdered dyes (in water) to achieve the color I wanted. I also mixed some darker dye for adding deeper color in some areas to give a little age and warm feel to it. I then rubbed down again with a 3M pad (grey- the very light abrasive) and allowed it to dry thoroughly, using a heat gun to hep it along.
After a good while, I applied Boiled Linseed Oil liberally and allowed it to penetrate for about ten minutes, then wiping off the excess. I rubbed it in with a paper towel (a light abrasive also) for a while and will allow it to dry for several days as I burnish it more with a white 3M pad to really soften the feel and look.
The last step will be to finish up with a wiping varnish, and this one will be set to go.

I second AJ's comments.

That carving is absolutely great in it's simplicity and it's accuracy in being done.

The lines look both crisp yet fade out without an abrupt end. I think that's a sign of work well done. I look forward to seeing the finished rifle.

A beautiful finish. May I ask what you are going to use for the wiping varnish?

Thanks for the very kind responses. That was a really gorgeous curly Cherry stock! I used Boiled Linseed Oil first, allowed it to thoroughly dry until there was no scent of it, and used satin wipe-on Poly in very light applications which I rubbed a fine 3M scoutpad between each. The finish is really durable and great luster. I am very happy for the owner.

That's a really nice 'clean' looking rifle.  Nice work!  'Love the color too.
