A friend showed this to me today,
He bought it in Friendship in 1964 for $1. Marked PATENT on the base.
I thought it was pretty neat.

That is really great, and imminently practical too. I assume the two halves "clam shell" around the hinge axis, which is fixed to the base? Lots of uses for one so small that protects the candle between uses. Nothing to break, and it looks like it would be pretty rigid when closed.

Dan that is a great little item. I'll bet all the trekkers would drool over this one.

I am already drooling

Neat and compact! Any provenance to this or is it a modern piece?
-
Nice, but I would wager modern.

Handy little lantern,
I cannot recall when or where but someone had something very similiar,,WW1 issue of sorts,European issue.
On the other hand,it looks more PC than a load of other stuff people sell, but thats my opionion .
I like it. ;)

The latch makes me think this one is fairly modern but the idea of the clamshell doors all polished on the inside to serve as a reflector when in use and as protection I would bet was around in 18th century England and probably the colonies. Another research topic!!

Tim,
The first U.S. patent was issued in 1790. You might want to search the over 6 million patents issued since then.

Yeah but the Chinese were surely making them a couple of Millennia earlier, eh??

I'd be interested in seeing some close ups of the hinge and the catch if that's possible?
