My cousin and i just purchased this Baxter Bean from a lady in Bean Station Tennessee he Grandfather had the gun when he passed. We are wanting input on the quality of the gun. Who can we have look at the gun for quality. We are descendants of the Beans that fought at The Battle of Kings Mountain.

Try sending a PM (private message) to Cades Cove Fiddler here on ALR. He is in your area and knows southern rifles.

Eric,
Great signature! Could you post a photo of the tang and "ramrod pipes"
This link should take you to a few photos from a previous ALR posting showing another Baxter Bean rifle.

Carl and Ken, I believe CCF mos likely go into a swoon or the Vapors over thisn. This rifle has all the right stuff for a southern gal/bro.
Sweet treasure, especially with a family connection.
Thank you guys for sharing with us.

She’s a beauty.
Quick ? for you more knowledgeable fellows. Is that patchbox cover a newer replacement?

I have an old barrel that, has the same B Bean signature in a silver plate . If my memory serves me correctly , I have the butt plate and the set of triggers as well as trigger guard . I got them at a Civil War show in Nashville sometime in the 80s . I believe the butt plate is still screwed to what was left of the stock. Forgive me if my facts are not straight. I have not had it out in years. From the pictures I can`t help but believe that this rifle has a replacement stock. The few complete hog rifles that I own have much more use / abuse on the wood. If I am wrong , please forgive me. Just an observation. James

I see a wood repair to the toe on the PB side, so doubt it's a replacement stock. But the original finish is no longer present.
The new screws in the patchbox, and the look of it, sort of say the patchbox is a replacement.
Lot's of these guns have come down through time with a lot worse happening to them.

That's some trigger guard too! Very rounded compared to the usual Bean style, squared ones with a closed ring, isn't it?
-
Looks like someone has been shooting this one based on some of the replacement parts.

OK I am going to stick my neck out and say this is a restocked Bean using a Baxter Bean barrel and I am not really convinced its a Bean barrel but I do not claim to be an expert on Baxter Bean rifles but this one does not look like any of the Baxter Bean rifles I have seen. I will say that what we are looking at is a nice-looking rifle I just have my doubts that it is an original Baxter Bean rifle and we owe it to the owner to give him more honest critique than it's a nice rifle. Ok, hit me hard, I probably deserve it.

Look at the Baxter Bean rifle on the cover of Randall Pierce's book here : https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=50941.0

Thank you Dennis.

No hurt feelings here. Please continue with the critiques we purchased the gun not knowing this is the only way we will learn. If we came to gun show could we verify the barrel. Is there anyone in Texas we could have look at it?
Please keep the critiques coming.
Thanks for any comments and the education.

:) :)... Greetings, Eric,... Are you near Houston,...? ... without holding your rifle in hand, I will not make a positive ID, but will tell you what I can from the photos,.. we need to see photos of barrel tang, front and rear sites, end of muzzle, and ramrod entry area on forestock,... initial observation tells me the gun has been re-stocked using a B. BEAN barrel,.. maybe even in Unicoi Co., TN during the 1860-70 period,.. many older guns were restocked as they got older and parts were replaced,... I can see some Unicoi features, and have a pretty good idea who the gunsmith was who did this work,...get as clear photos of the key areas mentioned and post,... I know an excellent gunsmith in the Houston area, who has a great old collection and has restored many old guns,...thanx for posting the gun, and I hope we can solve the mystery,... regards,... Dana Balinger,... (here is a photo of a B.BEAN with which I am very familiar)

Dana, Are you able to share with us who you think did this work?
Bill

I too think this is an older restock of a B. Bean barrel with the brass parts probably not related to the barrel. The patch box is definitely a modern replacement. Regardless it is still a nice old rifle but I would do something about that patch box.

I vote for Samuel Glover as the restocked. Get rid of that ugly patchbox.

I had a Bean gun come through my shop some years ago. Back action lock and silver mounted. The buttplate is silver sheet and the trigger guard it forged iron with coin silver laminate riveted to the surface. I don't recall if it had a box or not. I don't recall what Bean made it. jerry Nobel knows, I believe it was an Illinois gun? It's in one of Jerry's books, vol. 3 or 4.

I agree with Hlbly, the tang looks like SG’s work.
