Title: Patch knife mounting…
Post by: Nessmuck on August 09, 2022, 07:12:56 AM
Question…Do Yinz that are right handed…wear a bag on your left  side, so that you can attach a patch knife to your strap, for easy removal of the patch knife . I bought a right hand carry bag and find it odd to mount a patch knife on the strap and remove it with my right hand. Or do some folks …carry a bag on the left side and a horn on the right ? Thanks for any replies . Some pics of mounted patch knives are always welcome .

All the years of my shooting, I carried the pouch on the left and the horn on the right. I was right handed and it just seemed more natural this way. My measure (brass with a slide funnel)was mounted on the strap below the knife. I pulled the measure with my left hand, pulled the horn plug with my teeth, poured powder with right hand then returned the plug still in my mouth. I returned the horn to behind my shoulder then tapped the measure with my index finger 3 times the slid the top across to pour. Worked like a charm for me!

In a sheath attached to the backside of the pouch.

On a belt in a sheath, but do have two mounted to the back of bags (old steel straight razor blades with deer tine handles), and 1 in a sheath attached to the front strap. My belt knife is a little large for patch knife, the one on the strap is a little hard to reach but I do like and use the ones sewn to the back of the bags.

My most used bag has a patch knife sheath on it. The bag and horn both sit on my right side. I do not find it difficult at all to removed the knife from
the sheath on the strap. Same with the starter.

Looks like Mike has spent several hard winters in the mountains of somewhere living off the land and sleeping under the pines!!   ;)

I am lucky enough to own 3 and soon to be 4 of these bags by master bag maker Charlie Brown of N. Carolina.
