Title: rifle built fowler??
Post by: altankhan on September 15, 2022, 04:02:26 AM
Hello experts, I just got a hold of this plain smoothbore with what I see as rifle-like lines.  I am wondering if it is eastern Penn.?  40 1/4 in. .58 cal barrel, Ketland & Adams flintlock; I imagine a plain hunting gun of the 1820s?  I personally like the lines of the stock; seems to have been made with care; seems to have been refinished not too long ago.  Any opinions would be appreciated.  Obtained at a large show in Ohio.

This type of versatile gun is often referred to as a smooth rifle, or a buck-and-ball gun, capable of shooting either round ball or shot. It's a nice looking gun, looks PA to me as well. Only questionable area is the lock. It doesn't fill the old mortise as well as I would expect, particularly in the nose area, suggesting it might be a replacement.

Belated thank you for the reply.  I finally took out the lock, the main spring seems to have been replaced at some point with a modified spring from another early gun.
