I’ve been patiently waiting for the right rifle to come along. It shares characteristics with my ancestor William Shreckengost’s rifles. I’ve always believed that Nicholas was William’s master. They lived 20 miles apart and their families had known each other since the 1700s. He had 2 shops in Clarion County. One on Main St in Clarion and the other in Leatherwood, a tiny village outside of Clarion. Barrel stamped N Shennefelt Clarion PA.

My, my!!! That certainly is a fine rifle, Rob. It has it all; fine architecture, great attic condition, wonderful ornamentation and overall just a beautiful piece. That is one worth waiting for. Thank you for posting the great jpegs here. No one can look and this gun and not be impressed.

Rob, I was afraid you ran out of bushes to beat.I'm glad you found this. This is a very pleasing rifle. It's always a plus to have a master and apprentice in your collection. You can certainly see similarity's . Plus I'm always a sucker for an eagle . Jim

Way to go Rob, great find.

Thanks, I think I'll knock back that glossy Simonize paste wax with some Renaissance tonight. ;D

The condition is outstanding. To not have any missing inlays on a piece this old is a rarity in it's self. May sometime you can take a picture of this rifle next to one of William's Jim

I will definitely do that.

Rob, I was going to pay compliments to your very fine rifle and just about used the words "Smok'n HOT find" until you posted that article above!! ;D
Anyway, congrats on another gem in your collection! Joel

Ha ha Joel. Thanks! You think it might have been one of them? It's possible.

OK... off topic here...
I remember this area well. When I was 7 my parents moved the family to Pennsylvania. I grew up in DuBois (Clearfield county). My sister graduated from the college in Clarion. Our family doctor was named Shennefelt. I had a friend in school named Schrecengost. I think it was JR. high school. It was one of those parts of the country where everyone is related to everyone else.

It’s hard to find anyone in this area who doesn’t have a relative named Shreckengost
