The time to finish the stock is here. First coat of aqua fortis is on and drying.

I’m really digging  the walnut like tones. I wonder if I should give it another dose of the aqua fortis, or just stop right there. What think ye?

Looks great!

If it were me, I'd probably figure out a way to see what it would look like with a bit of finish on it.  But if I didn't do that, I'd probably put on another coat anyway. That is just what I'd do, and keep in mind I've not used iron nitrate before. So my advice is worth what it cost ;)

I did some internet searching and it seems that most people are using at least two coats. I don’t know if that will make it darker, or if it is just to ensure complete coverage. I went ahead and applied it again. I noticed that it just beaded up on the surface of the wood and I sort of had to rub it in. Here it is with the second coat of aqua fortis. I imagine this will be what it looks like once the oil hits it. I’m quite happy with this color.

I just wipe with water to see what it will look like with finish. Fine job, nice and even, deep rich color.

Did you heat it up after the AF was dry?

Yep. Here it is after blushing the second dose. It did make it a little darker, so I’m glad I did it. I’ve got to do some errands today before I go into putting the oil on. I will keep this thread updated with the rest of the process.

I usually apply Aqua Fortis with a paint brush. The stuff I use was made by a member of our guild. Sadly, he's now passed. I cut it with water, which doesn't seem to change the effect, but makes what I have go farther.

I like to blush it with a heat gun... then let it sit a day or two. Sometimes that gray-green color comes back after sitting overnight. Then I hit it again with the heat gun before applying finish.

Thanks Jim. First coat is on, and I burnished with a hickory ramrod cut off. I used the Tried and True Danish oil cut with some turpentine. Now I need to hang it up in the window and let the sun cure it.
