There was a photo on here not long ago someone posted showing their carving work. Also in the photo were what looked like special files, rasps or some kind of tools used in the work.
Can't ind the post now but I would like to know where I can get those tools?
If this makes any sense maybe you can tell what I mean?
-
Don't know what photo you are referring to. The special files might be rifflers. I get those from Grobet. I use the Liogier rasps. Not sure if that is what you are loking for.
-
Yea I know my description was pretty poor.
The photo showed what looked like file handles with bent rods and at the bottom a small round, some heart shaped or pointed parts that I assumed are what has the file ridges that scrape the work.
I think what you are calling rifflers might be what I am talking about. I will try and search for them.
Thanks

Probably Tom Curan's posts about the tools he uses.

Bogmon,
I use a variety of riflers (of various cuts) as well as dental instruments that I sharpen in various ways to use as scrapers. Fot larger areas, I use larger scrapers, but here ate the ones I use around all the detailed carving I do.

Here are a couple of the scrapers in use:

I am sure what you show would work well, even for me. But those are not what was pictured in that post, that I cannot find of course?

Search for the Tom Curran carving tutorial. If you can’t find it, send Tom a message.
-
If I remember correctly, Tom made the small rasps he used in the tutorial using a graver to fashion the teeth onto the different shapes.
-
At the Washington gun makers get together a couple years ago, Eric Von Aschwege had a stock carving class. He uses small file pieces , brazing on a handle. He heat treats them after brazing. Their shaped like an iron with safe sides so you can run right up to your carving.

Check the scrapers at the Micromark website.

I remember the post you're talking about... but I wouldn't know how to search for it. I think the tools you're talking about are something like "floats". Straight floats are used for making the opening for the blade on wood planes. But there are also angled floats. Brownells used to sell them for stock work. They were a lot smaller than those pictured. They had a tiny head and came in different shapes. Some had a triangular end... some rounded... and some square ended. They intended to get into the corners of inletting. Brownells no longer has them listed. I believe those in the forum post were hand made. The teeth on them weren't like files. The teeth were more like traditional plane floats.
OK... it's not letting me post photos right now... something about a server being down. I'll try to post some photos tomorrow.

I did try and search for Tom Curan. It may be there but I got nothing? Just was asked to go to Carlisle this Saturday, and just might go. Maybe I can find something there. I need to find some better tools than my butcher knife and hatchet.
Thanks to all

Photobucket owns those pictures now it appears.

There ya go. The one pictured in the 8th photo is what I had seen elsewhere and what I think I could realy use? I see he made it, so I could not purchase one anyway. Looks like I am going to try and make something also??
-
That's not the one I was remembering. Those teeth are cut more like a wood rasp. The tools I remember were the same size, but with different shapes, and with teeth cut like these...

Looks like a “float.” Woodworkers typically use them for shaping the mouth area of wooden hand planes.

Are these the tools you were thinking of?

Maybe this is what you are looking for.

Just something to consider... It's probably best to not rely on files, rifflers, rasps, abrasives too much when doing decorative stock carving. It can be challenging to get clean work from edged tools, but in the end the results are often much better. Just my opinion of course!

Maybe this thread from Dave

Made more like what RAT is showing, but pointed like a bricklayer's trowel.
Thanks guys for all your efforts to help.

Maybe this is the tool....

I acquired one from Ron Scott (forum member) and it does clean things up well.
PM him... he had a couple left when I last visited.

Or... we're you referring to scrapers? Like these.

Just hoping to help... I like puzzles.

WOW!! Those are not what I was refering to, but would probably work just as well, or better.
Did you make those?
Maybe that is what I should do, sprnd a day just making scrapers, not messes.
-
Those were made by Richard Miller. They were purchased for me by a friend at Friendship. This post talks about them.
