I've been working on a fowler that came into the shop. The .70 caliber tapered round barrel had no external touch marks but when the barrel was removed this was found on the underside of the tang. I've never seen a touchmark on a tang and am curious, any thoughts?

I have an original barrel with exactly that same punch mark. The punch was more centered on the underside of the tang and i asumed that it was used to help center a drill for drilling the tang hole but chose to put it in a different place. I will see if i can find the barrel that has one
