Title: Vintage Rifle
Post by: 2victor2 on February 28, 2023, 07:06:26 AM
Here’s another rifle I have. It’s has no markings that I can see. Approximately .40 cal. The barrel is
35 1/4”. 3/3” across the flats.The barrel has a solid under rib. The length is 52 1/2”.
It has a single set trigger. The barrel is held in with wedges and the lock bolt.
My someone here might have an idea on maker or region.
Any help would be appreciated.

Several details on your rifle suggest it's most likely from New York or perhaps Canada above New York. These details include: 1) the single trigger, 2) guard with rolled spur at back, 3) butt without a lot of height, and 4) the small "break" or bend in the lower butt line where it suddenly tips upward at about the point of the guard's rear spur. The slightly longer-than-normal cheekpiece also supports the suggested origin.

Your gun has nicely figured stock wood. The current position of the rear sight suggests its barrel may have been shortened 3 or 4 inches at the breech, perhaps the reason for not having a maker's mark on the top flat.

The lock may read A. W. Spies, a NY retailer if I remember right.
