I'm lookin at buyin a 1 1/8th, 36" long straight Getz barrel.
Anybody have any interest in tapering the barrel?
I'm not askin for a freebie, I will gladly pay a fair price for the work done.
I know I could have the local machine shop do this, but I would like someone with some knowledge of muzzleloaders do the deed.
Moderators I have no clue what this would cost, so it will be mighty hard for me to come up with a value to stay within your parameters for the classifieds.
You can round-file my ad if you don't like it.
Just say for less than the price for a new barrel,
Dennis

C. Sharps Arms in Big Timber Mt. have tapered several 34" barrels for me. My blanks started at 35". They do have a really nice milling fixture and the finish was very nice.

Bob;
Don't think I hadn't already thought of that. lol
I'm guessin a guy could get mighty close, it just takes time and a good straightedge. lol
For that matter what difference would the taper on the outside do to the accuracy on the inside?
I can always inlet the barrel no matter what shape it's in. lol
Doesn't matter, I think I'll stick with my original plan.
I could buy any barrel I want, but I think a vintage Robbins lock, should have a vintage barrel.
So I'll wait, one will come along.
Thanks for all of the advice guys.

With a 12L14 barrel, only a metalurgist/barrel maker would know, I suspect?
On finished HP 4140 barrels, outside barrel work is frowned upon as it might "grow" in dia.,
thus after muzzle turning for a break, for say, the "piece" needs to be re-stress relieved, IIRC.

When I was about 18 I hand filed a pistol barrel to octagon from round and had no fast cut files at all.Marshall Ralph Hooker filed a 48 inch one to octagon from a round blank. He only did one.It HAS been done but never again by me and Marshall Hooker is long deceased.
Someone with a long table travel milling machine or maybe a planer will have to be found and probably those mentioned in this thread can help.Good luck.
