Title: Novel Flint to Percussion Rifle
Post by: BigSkyRambler on March 14, 2023, 01:40:21 AM
Got this rifle today and it is really cool. It is a .50 smooth rifle converted from flint to percussion in a novel way. Lock stamoed H. LECHLER. Looks to be a potential shooter, too. Anyone have any information on Lechler?

Lechler seems to have been trained in Lancaster, but shows up in the Carlisle. Cumberland Couty tax roles 1797-1843.

Lechler is a well known rifle stocker. For additional info see the link below.

Usually when you see this type of conversion it is done rather crudely. This one is done with finesse. I like it.

Yep. Others I have seen just have a crude striker in the jaws.

Barrel is stamped what appears to be W. PANNEPACKER near breech under wood. Anyone have any information on a W. Pannepacker?

Henry Lechler worked in Carlisle in the first quarter of the 1800s; he made very fine rifles, but doesn't get near the credit he deserves for his work, in my opinion. Pennepacker, also Pannebecker, was a barrel maker and a fine gun maker as well. Nice find you have made; thank you of posting the photos of your fine rifle. Best conversion that I can recall seeing.
