Title: Huntingdon and Bedford Co. PA. Similarities
Post by: okawbow on June 29, 2023, 01:43:14 AM
The embellishments limits topic in gunbuilding has a link to a rifle by Benjamin J. Kough. That rifle was made in Huntingdon Co. and has a lot of similarities to a Bedford Co. rifle by George Fay that I have. The architecture is similar, as is the butt plate, trigger guard, and triggers. The patch box hinges are both hidden type, which is not common.
Does anyone know of a connection between these two gunsmiths?

Jacob Snider apprenticed w/ Fay who was more a Blair Co than Bedford Co gunsmith. I have never seen a Fay that I can recall w/ a Bedford hand made gunlock & hammer. If this gun is not signed it may indeed by a B J Kough. Compare with what Edith Cooper (KY Rifle & Me) called the "silver collection." Certainly 1 of top Silver Age guns.  Even w/o a Bedford lock I'd put Fay close bpttom of major Bedford Co gunsmiths -- he never had the talent to make the gun shown here.
