What is a good source for stock blanks on a budget? All the ones I'm finding are just over 2 inches thick and it doesn't seem like that is thick enough for a wide butt and any cast off. This is my first build from a blank so I'm a little bit in the dark on this. Any suggestions will be welcomed. Hoping to stay at $150 or less.

Allen Martin has some stocks for sale here from time to time. Maybe he has a plainer piece close to your price range.

Tom Fornicola (a.k.a. tfornicola) on this forum also offers up some really nice stocks from time to time. I’ve gotten a couple from him and would recommend checking to see if he has anything that fits your needs and price range.

I've bought stocks from Allen and Tom before. Both are straight shooters and good to deal with.

Don't be over worried about cast off. I have found with KY rifles it makes very little if any difference.

Just bought a stock blank from Allen Martin. Talk to him he can find something in your budget that will match what you need.

I second Allen Martin. I bought my blank from him. Very good blank and within your budget (at least it was in 2022!)

There are some inexpensive blanks at the Log Cabin that could fit the bill. Not much in the way of curl, but they are all serviceable

Daniel at Dunlap wood has great stock material he knows his wood and will sell you what you need at a fair price.

Depends on the rifle you want build, and the barrel you plan on using, also. 2” or a little over is plenty for a skinny Southern rifle, even with a little castoff.
And I’ll also recommend Allen and Tom. Have purchased from both and they’re great to deal with.

Try Tiger Hunt.
He might have some stocks left, but I bought out most of his inventory a few months ago.

Thanks Allen. I sent you an email. I'll call you Monday afternoon if you aren't off fishing!

You can build any early style gun with a 2 1/4 or a bit wider. If your building a right handed gun put the barrel in the left side of the stock, leaving just enough thickness for the lock mortise many people think the old guns have tall check rest but most are only 1/8 to 1/4 tall. I would call Allen Martin he has some good wood for cheap.
