A friend asked me about an old rifle he had. I asked him if was signed and he wasn’t sure. He sent me a few pictures and it is a percussion rifle with a short Hawken type fore end. The name A Chamness is stamped across the top flat. It has a barrel staple and a poured pewter nosecap. I wondered if anyone knows when this maker was active. This rifle belonged to his grandfather and it is staying with the grandson. Any information would be appreciated.

I realize the photos would really help. I am going to ask the owner if he permits the photos to be posted. If he does I will do so.
