Title: Patch Box release on NC Rifle

Thought there may be some interest in seeing how they made the patch box release with the button in the upper side plate of the box. the button was pushed under the side plate when I received the rifle. I wasn't able to remove the screws for the side plate so I removed the butt plate. The one picture shows the piece of leather that was between the push button and the butt plate and the other shows sit removed. Works like it should now.
Will post info in the rifle in a separate post.

Is the spring just weded into the wood of the stock.

Yes. It's just drove into the stock. It actually looks like a piece of brass.  Obviously worked as it has been there for quite some time.

I make simple springs like this (obviously not for locks or other critical function) out of brass all the time.  It's remarkable how 'springy' a piece of brass that is repetitively hammer-hardened will be, and provided the range of motion required is not much (as in this case) they seem to last just as long as steel.

The catch looks to be steel, however - how is it attached to the brass spring?  I'm going to assume that there is a tit on the backside of the catch that goes through a hole in the brass and is riveted.  I think solder might be on the weaker side, unless it was silver soldered.

Jim - The rest of the rifle is in the post for S M Davis? Restock?

Eric - The catch is steel and is not attached to the brass spring. It just sits on top of it. There is a small nail that the catch pivots on holding it to the stock. Simple, but it works.
