Hi all. Attaching a few photos of my latest project. Was delivered today as surprise gift to my long time mentor and former Marine, Bill Staats of Belleville, WV. Bill is in poor health, so I hope it brings him some joy.
Special thanks to "Blacksmoke" Hugh Toenjes for the attractive curly maple stock from 2018. Other parts: Rice 8" straight .45cal, Chambers late Ketland lock, brass I swaged out - some with guidance from the kindly George Suiter. I did battle with that trigger guard, cut and swaged it from 1/8" sheet stock and soldered on the front extension to fit into the stock. BC Super Blue rubbed back with maroon Scotchbright. Permalyn sealer after staining. Fairly firm burnishing with a little washboarding. Minimal carving except for moulding. 5 or 6 layers Chambets Oil then Renaissance Wax. Will strive for cleaner engraving lines in future but standing was a challenge; finally had back surgery today so I needed to get it to Bill before being down.

Hi Jason,
Well done and good on you!!! The greatest joy I know in gun making is helping to make or making a gun for a friend as a gift or to fulfill a need. It is a way to use your skills to help as you can. Nice pistol and I am sure it will bring great joy to the owner.

Your engraving has a distinctive style I like, particularly around the tang bolt (and especially considering your back challeges). A gift for a mentor is a special thing in itself, looks great!

From a historical point of view, this was not uncommon to see on original pieces.

Thanks Jason for documenting your build with such good pictures, that inspire us rookies. I appreciate all your evident handwork, lovingly motivated for a friend. I also like the scripture reference that fits the historical cultural context, and needs our remembrance today.

Not sure how he did his but I cut mine using a 2 flute end mill in my Jet Bench milling/drilling machine. You might get by using a drill press if you take it slow and careful. Years ago I had a chuck come off a drill press while I was milling some aluminium with it. Kind of scary with that sharp endmill and chuck flying off, climing the wall then dancing around my legs when it hit the floor. Believe you me I was also dancing around trying to get away from it!

Dennis, I had the same thing happen. It's an eye opener to say the least. There's just too much vibration for a drill press.
