I was hoping to have a nice whitetail as a backdrop for these pictures but I have to cut my MN Muzzleloader hunt short to help my daughter remodel her kitchen. Still have venison from last year in the freezer so starvation isn’t a concern.
I wanted a plain, sturdy, good shooting big bore hunting rifle, nothing fancy. From a plain maple blank I used a pattern from another of my rifles that fits me well w/o getting slapped in the cheek. It has 1/4”+ cast off.
The barrel is from FCI, 38” “D” wt., .60 caliber, 1-72” twist square grooves. It loads nicely and shoots well with 85gr 2f, a .588” round ball with .020” ticking patch & Tracks mink oil. Great barrel Charles.
The lock from Jim Kibler is a super sparker. It throws a shower of hot sizzlers directly into the pan. Not only a good sparking lock but the precision of the fit of the internals is worth studying. Ignition is instantaneous. You nailed it Jim!
The rest of the parts I made and left a few hammer marks on the butt plate, trigger guard and patch box. Like I said, it’s plain and probably crude but it handles well, shoots great, and the two main components are top notch. Hopefully next year it’ll drop a deer for me.

SECOND THAT!!!!! THERE WERE LOTS MORE RIFLES LIKE THIS ONE THAT THE FANCY ONES... MOST PEOPLE WERE LUCKY TO HAVE A GUN LET ALONE A RIFLE!!!!!!

That's a good sturdy hunting rifle. I've always said that I'd have the ugliest horse in the west but it would keep me from my enemies, That rifle belongs with the horse.

I like the bore size. I'd prefer a smoother crown, of course.

I tend to prefer plain maple over curl, especially when finished a bit darker. I like that patchbox too. Very nicely done!

Nice rifle, will be a great hunting rifle with plenty of knock down power.
-
I'd call it a "serious hunting rifle" from what I can see.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I appreciate it.
Having now used Mr. Kibler’s English lock, I believe I will be using his Ketland on another rifle with yet another FCI barrel I have coming, an “A” wt .38 caliber, in a figured cherry blank.
