Title: German Jaeger - Information

Just recently acquired this German Jaeger. 1850s. .54cal Markings show marked "V. Chilshilling in Suhl" with "SPKI" on the breech. May mean "Valentin Christoph Schilling" , Any info will be appreciated.

Quite interesting. The barrel at the breech, appears to be in EXCELLENT, like-new condition. I wonder if it is a re-barrel job.
A picture of the lock side would be nice.

The barrel does look new. I will take it out and see what markings are there

Looks good to me. A surprising amount of the European guns survive with little wear, including excellent bores.

If a mid 19th century German gunsmith was going to make a full stock Hawken, this is what it would look like.
Very nice rifle in excellent condition.

Sideplate,for German Jaeger, lower picture. Upper picture is our Swiss Jaeger. Possibly 1750ca but converted to percussion.

Sorry Bill, was meaning sideplate ...opposite the lock!

Can I ask the length of the lock on that grand looking Swiss rifle?

The original Swiss Jaeger is the one Relic Shooter sold to me on muzzleloader. Lock plate is about 4.5 inches. There really is no sideplate.

Boy that's interesting Bill,

The second gun that is.
It may have been a target arm.
We normally see a wing nut, (or thumbscrew) on wheel-locks, so the lock can be dismounted easily for cleaning.
This rifle seems to have that exact same feature.

The first one you show, has a rather unusual (to me at any rate!) sideplate and is very well done.

Still Bill, this second one takes the biscuit in my eyes, and although it's not my business, I'd leave it as it is and enjoy shooting with it!

It is very nice work!

Does the front lock screw actually do anything Bill?
