Title: February Postal Match
Post by: MuskratMike on February 02, 2024, 12:08:32 AM
I know this isn't everyone's favorite target but in the honor of St. Valentine's Day lets have a go at it. To be shot at 25 yards off hand, seated or bench as long as there are no artificial supports, cross sticks, sand bags etc... Five shots at the target half ball rule applies. Since some of our shooters don't have blue skies sunshine and 59 degrees like we have let's limit it to 3 targets. Post your best or all, best one counts. To pint it go to: NMLRA.org/downloads you will see the target I believe on the main page. If it helps you may stick on a colored circle over the "X"-circle only. Maximum score this month is 50 5X. Good luck to all.
When you are out with friends, wives or girlfriends on the 14th, don't ever make this toast: "Here's to wives and lovers, may they never meet".

 ;D

I might actually get out and shoot this one this weekend given the unseasonably warm weather forecasted although the melted snow has made everything real soggy out there.

Got no excuses it was a slightly overcast day, zero wind and no rain. I shot my Kibler .40 caliber using a .395 ball, .015 ticking patch with spit for lube and 45 grains of Goex 3F.
I score them as: #1 a 38 1X, #2 a 49 0X, and #3 a 46 0X. Shouldn't take much to beat this. I shot off a bench using only elbows and hands for support.

I had to look at November's postal match which you won Muskrat. You had some impressive scores in the November match using the same rifle and the same load. The only difference is that you shot November's match offhand. Elbows on the bench may not be better than offhand for you.

I agree, but had the foot issues and had a hared time with my balance. Those SMR's and Soddies with those deep crescent butts are ment to be shot offhand.

Got the .36 Bedford out for this one. I have a left shoulder injury that just won’t heal, so had to touch my elbow to the tractor seat to be able to hold the rifle up. Only had one target left from last time and no printer here at my cabin. Shot better than I thought I could with the sore shoulder, but did better last time free hand. Hopefully will get more targets and maybe the shoulder will feel good enough to shoot fully offhand.

Actually was elevation. I shot the target hanging that way. If I hold more than a couple seconds, with the pain in my shoulder, I tend to drop my arm a little. Working on exercises to fix that. Always something….

Don’t just love fliers? I called shot 3 on #1 out a little but not that much.  >:( ;D

40 cal N. Hawk inspired swivel breech. 62 gr of FFF, 395 ball, ticking patch and Neatsfoot and Beeswax patch lube. No wiping. Need to get the other barrel sighted in. This barrel is too high so I need to raise the front a little. Now I need to finalize the lock, pans and action.
And work on loads. This was a powder measure I had handy.

Dphariss is our new leader with a 49 2 or 3x. Could some others take a look at this and see how many are in the "X" ring? Going to take some fine shooting to out do this score, but it can be done. Some of our best shooters have not entered yet. This could be an interesting finish!

I would not call it three and I had to do this with my measuring tape to call it two. But I will accept what ever is decided.

The outer edge of that curved line sure looks close - within a couple thou, any way, but agree with the call of 2X.
You need to shoot your last targets a mite more accurately, if I use my BIG match rifle. ;D ;D just kidding.

The “rings” are wide and it fools the eye. Why I had to work at it.  You need to outshoot me so I don’t have to come up with an idea for March. When I looked at that low shot I was like Gary Cooper in the movie  Sgt York. “I can’t figure how it got way out there”. But it happens. ::)
I gotta collect eggs for the Wife and then get to shop and do some tuning on this Hawk thing.  I had to weld a higher blade on the trigger and did not clean it up properly and it moves on the sear and caused a click and what is essentially a two stage trigger. Never noticed it before but have shot this rifle very little and its been in the safe semi-finished for way to long.  Found out the L&R frizzens needed to be heated to yellow and water quenched to give decent sparks for one thing…..

I didn't get to shoot last months match due to weather and an archery javelina hunt.
Got to go out yesterday, it was a really nice day lots of sun and temps ranged from low 50s to high 50s. Light wind coming from the North East between 5 and 8 MPH.
I was using my .40 Getz barreled squirrel flintlock rifle. Firing a .395 ball with Jo Ann's #40 drill. lubed with bear lube. All this sitting on 50grains of Dupont3f dated 1963.
I shot all the targets offhand. From left to right, the first target was my best, which I score a 48X, the second I score a 47 X , the third I score a 46x.
I laid the targets over another and lined up the rings and used a caliper to determine half ball. At any rate it is a moot point.
(https://i.ibb.co/DY7KqHp/0218240505-Burst01.jpg) (https://ibb.co/zFSfkTJ)
I shot the targets vertically. I compared them with this same target that I shot in August with the same gun at a different range. I have determined I should make a shader for my front sight, for target shooting. The POI as far as windage goes is highly affected by the direction of the light.

Seeing how my back board is on the opposite side of the creek from my shooting station I thought I'd do a belly flop on the way across to posting my target.
Even being soaking wet I stuck it out and shot a possible 34 .
English Fowler smoothie, 70 grains 2f patched ball, elbow rest.

Nice day 42 degrees no wind. Kibler SMR .36, 40 gr 3F, .350 RB .020 patch
First target sitting elbows on bench, one full view one close up.

(https://i.ibb.co/L1TFtmQ/feb-2024-1-close.jpg) (https://ibb.co/m4njqkv)

I cannot for sure see all 5 shots due to ragged hole. I would tell others 50 with 3X, but for competition I can only go 40 with 2X

Second target standing with hand against post, looks like 43

(https://i.ibb.co/sF5Mr3S/feb2024-2.jpg) (https://ibb.co/cNb7dT5)

3rd target had a couple fliers, so just 26

(https://i.ibb.co/jMjpXvm/feb2024-3.jpg) (https://ibb.co/pzkmFvc)

Then just for grins look at this. It was nice so I shot a different target. Five clustered by Bull. Then used a couple.015 patches and got the 2 shots way left. Then went back to .020 and last two back over with the others. Moral of story, once you set up for a load do not change anything.

Excellent target foresterdj. I am not sure how you see it, but I was taught to and have scored international targets in the past & it is quite obviously a 50 3X.
The 3rd X ball is appears to be cutting into the middle X hole & is almost completely inside the X ring as well.
I'm at home, still sick with a cold. Was hoping to get out today or tomorrow. Not going to happen today.

Gorgeous weather here this weekend, so I finally got out to shoot one of these matches for the first time since November. I was shooting offhand  for the top target and kneeling with my elbows rested on a table for the bottom target. I was shooting with my .38 caliber Lancaster percussion rifle with 40 grains of GOEX 3F, .375 round balls, and .020 cotton patch with equal parts Murphy Oil Soap/Alcohol/Water for lube.

Both looks to be a 47 1x.

Shot my .32 squirrel rifle built by a dear friend Buck McKnight that passed in 2000.
30 grains 3f. 310 ball patched with linen and Dawn and water lube.

It was just a mite chilly this afternoon so Taylor and I got out. -3 or -4 only.
I have 2 targets to post - a 45  and a 49 2X by my reckoning.
On the 45, my first shot was a 9, so I did what BR competitors call "chasing the hole". Sometimes it works, sometimes(most) times not so much, especially
in a scoring target. LOL
Load .682" ball,  10 ounce denim patch
100gr. 2F Schutzen
Table, elbow rest.

Same here Bob- running down to -20 this week. Supposed to warm up in 10 days or so.
It wasn't too bad today, but fairly deep snow. We weren't sure we were going to get into the B.P. range
due to the snow plowed-in entrance, but we were able to break through it - F350 Diesel leading the way.
The rest of the snow in the field was only up to the hubs.

Congratulations to the February winner, foresterdj with an outstanding score of 50 2X. I couldn't do that good using a lead sled! Look forward to see what you come up with for March. Winter rain, wind and snow have returned to the pacific NW so it might be awhile before I can get out again, but nothing compared to our friends in the far north.

Late to the party again, but anyway, Daryl and I got out and shot on February 29th.  I used my A. Verner copy, ie: .50 cal 48" Getz barrelled, simple trigger.  I shot 75 gr. FFg GOEX and a .495" pure lead ball with .018" denim patching and Lehigh Valley Lube.  Elbow rest on a table, 25 yards lazer'd.
My frizzen spring broke on the first shot, but I continued shooting and fired a total of 20 rounds.

Title: Re: February Postal Match
Post by: D. Taylor Sapergia on March 03, 2024, 12:09:43 AM
Great question Justin!  I have shot this rifle a fair amount as has Daryl, and we have never had issues with the frizzen spring.  When it broke on the first shot, I didn't notice anything wrong until I found the upper leaf laying on the table.  The temperature was just below zero C, so it wasn't the cold tht was the issue.  I made the spring from a TOW casting when I made the lock those years ago, and obviously, had the temper a little too hard.
I'm pretty sure a large Siler frizzen spring will replace it, but it won't have the shape and filing of the original Verner spring.

It was only -4, Mike.  The snow makes it look cold, I guess. It was deeper than the boots I was wearing.
We took turns going down to replace the targets.
I find it quite interesting, the angle of my barrel in the picture. No shots were fired over the target. LOL
I guess that little gun has a bit of recoil, even with the close range "target" load.
