Title: Plain little horn

Simple and practical little horn for my son, I made yesterday.

Neat horn, very tasteful! How did you attach the staple to the body?

Drilled slightly undersized pilot holes and hammered the staple in. Filed barbs on the staple first.

I drill all the way through the side of the horn. I put a drop of glue on each point to seal the staple, but they are tight enough it probably isn’t needed.

Thank you, I always wondered how that staple was attached on horn bodies. I think I recall reading somewhere that the front staple was predominantly used as a keeper for the strap? So instead of wrapping the strap around the front staple like you do the rear one, you wrapped it around the horn and the front staple kept it from sliding off the tip?

Another thought on affixing the staple.
I have a #1 Phillips screwdriver that I ground about half the tip off of.  I grind the staple legs to long points, drive it into the horn as okawbow described, and then run the screwdriver down the tip until I contact the staple.  Then I give the handle a little tap with a plastic mallet to bend the staple tips over.  It won't go anywhere.
And yes, the staple is to hold the strap in place rather than to hang the horn from.

I think John’s method is probably as good as you could do. I must confess that I have never clenched the staple, but tempered the staple holes to a good snug fit so that the staple has to be lightly driven in. The ones I’ve done would be very difficult to extract, assuming a thick enough horn wall. There should be little stress on the staple as it is just meant to keep the strap from sliding off. Now I don’t know if the horn will shrink later or if the horn may crack at the holes. Time will tell.
